I'm running the 23tooth. The speedo is within a half mile of what it's supposed to be, so it's as accuarate as you'll get.

I think I got mine from mustangsunlimited.com

2000 - 2002 models with factory 2.73 gears SHOULD have a 8 tooth output shaft drive gear.

Check your exisiting speedo gear to confirm, if you do not want to pay the approx $29 for the gear plus shipping and find out you need the $9 orange gear you can get locally.

The VSS location as you will see it under the car

Slide out the clip and remove the old gear, note I have the Green 17 tooth gear, Using Liquids chart this confirms my 8 tooth output shaft drive gear.

New vs old

Part# black 23 tooth gear DFM17271J 01 From Mustangs unlimited

Shipping is high as they use a box, perhaps it avoids the small gear from getting damaged by sending in a padded envelope??

I just pulled one out of a used interceptor, threw in new bearings and clutches, with ford racing ring&pinion, and she drives good as new. Don't cost too much either.

Maybe he wants better mileage..... that's the only valid reason I can think of.

Do you just have to pull that black c-clip and pull the old gear off and then replace with new gear and the c-clip?

I did mine in 5 minutes. didn't even jack up the car. and the ford dealer got me the gear in 24 hours, don't remember how much, but it was under $5. Like 2 or 3 iirc.
