Started disassembly of the $75 PI motor-2003- that I bought from a Hippie




Guides looked pretty good

a little rust in the bores


it had signs of milky oil but I could not determine where from

the head gaskets and oil filter adapter gaskets looked ok

Maybe it was from a bad oil cooler

The heads look good and cams turned easily. I'll know more when I tear into the bottom end. It got too hot today to finish. I might just use the topend on a non pi motor. This will be going into my white 96 P71

I didn't know it got hot in Seattle. 65 too much for ya? had to take your turtleneck off? lol

I want to get my 96 P71 back on the road. It has a rod knocking. I bought this '03 motor because I thought the 03+ has better connecting rods.

Scrap the block and use the heads for a compression bumb. Or give them to me! I want some PI. Unbelievable purchace.

82 degrees with 0 humidity and they cry murder...

It's heaven compared to the 100+ degrees and 80% humidity I used to experience..

I assume that the engine was proven not able to turn over as you had mentioned on the previous thread.

The previous owner said that it would turn over a little and then lock up. It did it to me once but I was able to rock it with a tire bar on the crank and it freed up. It must have been the surface rust in the bores. Maybe I will hone and ring it. Now I will start to teardown the 95 NPI that I originaly bought for the swap for $200 to determine which bottom end is better. I am leaning towards the NPI shortblock with the PI topend and using the best chains and guides. The PI guides looked good. I am getting more comfortable working on these motors. I was a bit reluctant to work on computerized fuel injected modern engines with wires and hoses everywhere with metric bolts. I have always been a brand X mechanic but I must say working on these is pretty straight forward. I really like the bolts they use. You just crack them and spin them out by hand. Most 30+ year old stuff I have worked on has stiff bolts that you have to fight. Who knows I might be ready to tackle the J-Mod soon. And where are all you heat lovers that want to help me wrench on the motor in this unbelieveably hot scorching 85 degrees blazing hot afternoon sun?? Thats a joke son. Can't you see there is no shop. This is redneck auto repair style.

Daaaaamn Perhaps if I found deals like that in Seattle I'd drive there more often;) How about a set of E7 heads from a mustang or some other HO 5.0...How about a 5.4 short block for my 99???...lol Thats a great deal you got:) nice pics.

I'd throw the entire new one in the 96. just throw in some new bearings in the bottom end, get the crank checked out and your good to go.

Car waiting for its new motor . I drove it about 10 miles today with the bad motor but it sure was knocking and misfiring.

I wanted to get the tranny off but I stripped a bolt so I gave for today. I don't yet know which bottom end to use. I'll keep ya post when I strip the two lower ends. Just gotta get the car going cause I don't like driving the tow truck everywhere.
