With the addition of my cars new rear end its come to my attention that I can no longer drop my gas tank without first taking out the IRS. For this reason i would like to remove my stock gas tank and add a fuel cell in my trunk. I dont know that much about how the fuel system works in a car but I keep hearing that I need to use my stock sending unit however in order to do that it needs to be mounted in the same position it is now which is sideways. I would like to have a fuel cell with the sending unit sitting on top. I know people who build fuel cells so i can get one that fits nicely into my trunk but I would like to know if i want my sending unit mounted on top of the fuel cell what will I need to do? Im guessing buy an aftermarket sending unit and probably change out a bunch of other stuff in the car as well if someone could explain the process to me and recommend some quality parts id really appreciate it.

I use an aftermarket Jaz tank in the RocketCouch with a fuel sending unit built into it. I made a mount on to keep the tank level so it always has a constant supply of fuel going to the sump.

Here's some pics of mine:

Making the stock sending unit work with an aftermarket or custom cell will need modification. I don't even think that anyone that has done a fuel cell would even bother with the stock sending unit.

I know your buddy can make a tank but if you need any fuel system parts please let me know \:\)

Chris i didn't know you were running nitrous. And i think a fuel cell would be cool.

I personally dont think you would need to use the sending unit thats in a ford really. Its just that you'd have to pick a aftermarket sending unit that will work with the ford style.

an example. I had a G body cutlass and had a fuel cell in it..Gm usses sending units that read 0 ohms - 90 ohms. 0 ohms = empty and 90 = full.

I"m not sure what ford units read at but thats all you'd need to make sure of.

15ohms = empty
160ohms = full
resistance in the wiring from the fuel sender to the gauge should be < 5ohms
