Maybe I have too much free time.

I looked at the stock air box snorkel. It looked really restrictive. I took it off and measured it- the narrow part of the opening is about 44mm. The opening into the box is 70mm
The exit to the MAF is 80mm and then steps down.

I saw the $6 Home Depot snorkel but this is not only free but has a bigger hole and due to it's shape, should flow better.

Clearly, that 44 mm hole is a major restriction. I took the snorkel off and drove the car a couple of days. I liked the sound better and since it was louder, I'll say it felt better too. The butt dyno confirms.

But I know it needs cold air.
I was having lunch and an idea came to me.

I took the plastic drinking cup and cut the bottom off. It was the same size as the opening in the box and could be jammed in quite securely. With some trimming, it extended through the holes in the radiator support and gets air from right behind the headlight. I painted it black and now sucks air through a 75mm scoop instead of a 44 mm snorkel.

Using my memory of high school math - a 75 mm hole is 4418 sq mm and a 42 mm hole is 1520 sq mm - so a breathing hole 3x bigger (plus, colder) can't be bad. Plus they have good root beer.

I must admit that is an ingeniously simple idea. I would like to see pics of it. My only concern though is will it hold up well over time through different seasons? Good free intake mod though!

I'd like to know about this myself. There's been other writeups about people using some PVC plumbing pike, and cut a hole between the airbox, and the fender well, and get air right from above the tire. Only costs $6, and from the review the guy gave, it worked out pretty well.

I thought of cutting off the stock snorkel but even if you cut if off where it comes out of the box, you have a hole about 50-55mm which is smaller than than the MAF or the throttle body so, you'd still have some degree of restriction.

The cup I used is the thicker plastic, not the thin crunchy stuff.

Plus, If you want to win the redneck of the year award and be honored at the trailer park clubhouse near the filled-in pool, I'd rather have an old soda cup from a BBQ place than sewer pipe from a fancy store like Home Depot.
It might work better if you made it with used sewer pipe.

I did a mod similar to this using a piece of plastic pipe. It was actually the cover from the hydraulic cylinder on an adjustable desk chair! It looked stock and didn't bottleneck, but it didn't sound as good as the open hole.

Update-

It's been on the car for 4 months and 5,000 miles and has held up perfectly.

Someone PM'd me comparing it to another mod where you cut off the snorkel and add some straight pipe to it.

My opening is 75mm and cutting off the snorkel still uses some of the base where it's only about 66 mm.

66mm is smaller than the 70mm MAF. = restriction

A 70 mm maf has a 3845 square mm opening.
The snorkel mod results in a 3421 sq mm opening.

This one has a 4418sq mm opening = 30% bigger.

I just removed the "silencer" on mine all together and didn't replace it with some sort of other tube. Same idea, I suppose.

Too bad you cut that cup up, it was a collector's item!

By the way I am using the same airbox as you. Late 2003 air box I believe I had heard.....with alot more hinge tabs compared to the other air boxes with only 3 tabs that like to warp!

I did the harness rewire to accept the 03 MAF with integrated intake air temp sensor (but I already told you that anyway)

Dickey's is alive and well here- my wife won't let me keep anymore of the cups.

The idea behind using the cup, instead of just removing the snorkel is to reach out of the engine compartment through the hole in the radiator support to where cold air is coming in.
