Maybe I have too much free time.

I looked at the stock air box snorkel. It looked really restrictive. I took it off and measured it- the narrow part of the opening is about 44mm. The opening into the box is 70mm
The exit to the MAF is 80mm and then steps down.

I saw the $6 Home Depot snorkel but this is not only free but has a bigger hole and due to it's shape, should flow better.

Clearly, that 44 mm hole is a major restriction. I took the snorkel off and drove the car a couple of days. I liked the sound better and since it was louder, I'll say it felt better too. The butt dyno confirms.

But I know it needs cold air.
I was having lunch and an idea came to me.

I took the plastic drinking cup and cut the bottom off. It was the same size as the opening in the box and could be jammed in quite securely. With some trimming, it extended through the holes in the radiator support and gets air from right behind the headlight. I painted it black and now sucks air through a 75mm scoop instead of a 44 mm snorkel.

Using my memory of high school math - a 75 mm hole is 4418 sq mm and a 42 mm hole is 1520 sq mm - so a breathing hole 3x bigger (plus, colder) can't be bad. Plus they have good root beer.

I must admit that is an ingeniously simple idea. I would like to see pics of it. My only concern though is will it hold up well over time through different seasons? Good free intake mod though!

I'd like to know about this myself. There's been other writeups about people using some PVC plumbing pike, and cut a hole between the airbox, and the fender well, and get air right from above the tire. Only costs $6, and from the review the guy gave, it worked out pretty well.

I thought of cutting off the stock snorkel but even if you cut if off where it comes out of the box, you have a hole about 50-55mm which is smaller than than the MAF or the throttle body so, you'd still have some degree of restriction.

The cup I used is the thicker plastic, not the thin crunchy stuff.

Plus, If you want to win the redneck of the year award and be honored at the trailer park clubhouse near the filled-in pool, I'd rather have an old soda cup from a BBQ place than sewer pipe from a fancy store like Home Depot.
It might work better if you made it with used sewer pipe.

I did a mod similar to this using a piece of plastic pipe. It was actually the cover from the hydraulic cylinder on an adjustable desk chair! It looked stock and didn't bottleneck, but it didn't sound as good as the open hole.

Update-

It's been on the car for 4 months and 5,000 miles and has held up perfectly.

Someone PM'd me comparing it to another mod where you cut off the snorkel and add some straight pipe to it.

My opening is 75mm and cutting off the snorkel still uses some of the base where it's only about 66 mm.

66mm is smaller than the 70mm MAF. = restriction

A 70 mm maf has a 3845 square mm opening.
The snorkel mod results in a 3421 sq mm opening.

This one has a 4418sq mm opening = 30% bigger.

I just removed the "silencer" on mine all together and didn't replace it with some sort of other tube. Same idea, I suppose.

Too bad you cut that cup up, it was a collector's item!

By the way I am using the same airbox as you. Late 2003 air box I believe I had heard.....with alot more hinge tabs compared to the other air boxes with only 3 tabs that like to warp!

I did the harness rewire to accept the 03 MAF with integrated intake air temp sensor (but I already told you that anyway)

Dickey's is alive and well here- my wife won't let me keep anymore of the cups.

The idea behind using the cup, instead of just removing the snorkel is to reach out of the engine compartment through the hole in the radiator support to where cold air is coming in.

Yes I understand. Although it is pretty close anyway, and the cup technically reduces the inner diameter a bit....although just slightly, it still does.

Funny thing, the older Cherokee's used to have an extension in the air box to reach behind the headlight just as the Panther's do. However in the later models this extension was eliminated and a block off plate was added over the hole behind the headlight. Literally, a plastic piece screwed to the header panel blocking this cold air flow was added from the factory. Easily removed, however.....still, what is the idea behind that?!?!

I wouldn't think a budget cut would involve the addition of a worthless piece of black plastic covering up a nice hole which let that nice colder air in. But who knows, maybe they found some scrap plastic somewhere.

I did a similar mod to my airbox. instead of using a cup, i used a 3" abs rubber pipe coupler with a hose clamp. I had to cut it a bit to fit perfectly, but it looks clean, and makes a positive seal with the fender. \:\) btw, it clamps onto the outside of the hole of which the snorkel was removed.

That sounds like it would be the best option as the tube would not make the inner diameter of the intake hole any smaller than it already is. Can you grab some pictures to show what kind of coupling you actually used?

How many fractions of a millimeter thick is a free cup? maybe 1/2mm or 1/3mm?

As long as this hole is bigger than your throttle body or MAF I don't think you need to worry about that 1/3 of a mm difference.

The problem with the home depot mod where you cut off the snorkel and attach a pipe, is the remaining piece has a smaller hole than any other point in the intake system.

That was my first idea, but my box has little reinforcing ribs around the flange so there is no clean lip to clamp to. A little dremel work could fix that, but I like the scoop shape along with the $0 of mine

the coupling i used was a 3" one of these:
http://www.absoluteponds.com/images/rubber-coupling.jpg

i needed to cut it a little for it to clamp onto the airbox tightly.

Today, I removed the snorkel from my airbox. The 99 Store sells three plastic cups for... you guessed it. Pics work better than words:

Painted the cup flat black with Dupli-Color Vinyl & Plastic paint. Conclusion: spent a very short amount of time, 33 (plus tax) on a cup, and the cabin sounds better when hitting passing gear. Also, the cup extends further past the body frame than the snorkel. In theory, there should be more cooler air entering the box in addition to the larger opening.

Whether it works or not, it was a fun/quick project and it sounds better.

That. Is. AWESOME! Perchance I can give it a shot on my 99 stock airbox? Hmm, now that I think about it, maybe I can take a dremel to where the snorkel meets the box and make it a bit bigger there also...?

It's a good mod indeed, but I think a fair contender for Redneck Mod awards is still the one where Interim and I totally removed the airbox from his 03 Vic and duct taped a K&N cylinder filter to the MAF and then duct taped the whole ensemble to the engine side of the wheel well. All while having a County Sheriff living across the street that worked night shift at the time. LOL, oh my, what a night that was!

FTW! I like yours the best so far

I actually did this a couple days ago with... wait for it... a plastic Miller Lite cup. I did not paint it. Works awesome. Redneck engineering for the win!

I actually tried to pull this mod off today, went to a couple of places, and get this.... They didn't have the 'proper' cup I needed, lol. Not even at wal-mart. The cups I did find, were the right length (or height depending on how its looked at), but were too skinny to fit properly.

I dunno, I just did the hole saw mod to the bottom of the box, and restriction is no issue as there's WAY more than just the front hole, and the cosmetics don't really matter, as you can't see the bottom without removing it.

I couldn't say if it's better or worse, but I know some others here have done box chops with good sound and flow results.

So do you think just swissing the box would work better than this snorkel mod?

I think the snorkel mod would be better then your still drawing in cold air from behind the headlight.

I pulled my snorkel off today and put in a 4/$1 Cup into the opening. No paint, just a gaudy cup that no one will ever see but me. What the hell, it only cost me a quarter!

Nothing wrong with that, better than starting a new thread about the very same thing.
