So, I have a Signature series TC with a 4.6 and an AOD.

From what I understand, I've got a peg-leg (open) 8.8, 28 spline axles, and 3.27 gears.

I'm looking at going to a 16", or 17" wheel and want to upgrade my axles and diff. I'd like to go with a 3.55 or 3.73 gear and a posi. I don't know a great deal about passenger car 8.8's and widths, well not nearly like what I know about full size truck 8.8's...

Can you tell me what's compatible with my Lincoln's drivetrain in terms of width and bolt pattern? I'm aware that I'll probably end up with a 31 spline axle to achieve positraction, but I'm unsure what vehicle I can pull it from. Rangers, explorers, mustangs, cougars, thunderbirds, crown vics, and mercury's seem like the logical places to hunt. I'm unsure if the ranger and explorer use the 5x4.5" bolt pattern, or how wide/narrow the axle shafts are in comparison.

What would be the best place to start my search? Axle codes, years and models would be great if anybody has that info.

Thanks,
James.

All the '87-'88 Turbo Coupes have a 8.8" Traction Lock(posi is a GM term)rear, with disc brakes and 3.55(5-spd)or 3.73(auto) gears, they are 28 spline... All pre '87 Turbo Birds/Cougars have a 7.5" rear with 3.45 gears... Downside is they are all 4 lug and too narrow(housing same as Stang but axles are longer than pre '94)... Other than these and V8 Mustangs(Pre '94 are 4 lug and usually have 2.73/3.08 gears) most passenger vehicles excepting for the full size, which generally do not have Traction Lock had a 7.5" rear... Lincoln MK-VII have a 8.8" rear from '86-up but I believe housing is same as Birds(axles longer) and probably is a peg leg with 3.27 gears...

I'm not really familiar with the F-150 P/Us or vans, possibly one of those would be correct length but I doubt you'll find one that has the correct mounting for the Lincoln... BTW '93-'95 Lightnings have Traction Lock & 4.10 gears stock, but one of those likely would cost as much as a new gear set and T-L unit)...

If you can swap the gears and T-L unit from a T-Coupe rear, that would likely be your cheapest route...

My swap will be strictly ring/gears & the differential itself.

I do not want to just put an entirely new axle assembly into my car, I have no desire to remove the axle itself.

If I have to change from 28 to 31 spline, I will be changing shafts as well.

My real concern was the axle shaft length of 31 spline axles. I'm sure I could have it cut down at a machine shop, but I'd really rather not be forced to go that route.

The object is to swap gears and differential without changing axle shafts, but I am prepared to do so if need be. I just want to right length shafts. I.E. which cars run a Traction Lock rear with the correct length 28 or 31 spline axle shafts.

You're saying the Thunderbird super coupe, or just a tbird coupe would work?

I believe the cougar XR7's and T bird's use the same axle set up and are solid, no IRS.

Full size pickups use a much wider track 8.8 axle than passenger cars. There is no way to use the axle shafts without having them modified by a machinist. But the differential is still usable in either 28, or 31 spline.

Ideally, I'd like a 28 spline limited slip diff (this is my preference for referencing passenger car diffs, vs. Lockers) that I can just drop in with my existing axle shafts.

I suppose I could pull parts from various rear ends with the correct does, but I will try to use the link listed above to determine a donor with all that I need.

For the 8.8" with 3.55/3.73 gears and Traction Lock, I was speaking of '87-'88 Turbo Coupes with the turbo 4cyl only, there were no turbo Cougars in '87-'88... All '83-'88 V6 and most V8 Birds/Cougs have a 7.5" rear, with 2.73/3.08 gears(In '88 a few with the 5.0 had a 8.8" & 3.08 cogs)... The supercharged, '89-'95 Super Coupes and '89-'91 XR-7 Cougars have IRS and 2.73-3.08 gears...

8.8" rear differentials come in 2 flavors; passenger car = 28spline... Light truck = 31 spline.
there are a few exceptions to this statement, but most of the time it's accurate.

ALL the ring and pinions are the same, regardless of how many splines the carrier is, so ANY 8.8" gear set will bolt into your car.

traction lock carrier is the same thing, any of the 28 spline units will bolt into your car AND you do NOT need to replace the axles, just re-use your stock axles.

I will tell you these cars are bad about eating the passenger side axle bearing and axle. I would highly recommend replacing all the bearings.

I knew about the ring gear, and differential, as long as the spline count is correct. I was unaware of the passenger axle problem, I'll definitely look into that.

I'm aware at how versatile and broadly used the 8.8" rear is when it comes to multi platform ford vehicles.

The ring gear isn't an issue, as I stated above, I can score a 3.55 or 3.73 ring & pinion out of any 8.8. It's just finding a 28 spline LSD. I'll find a donor car eventually, I'll just go picking around the junk yards to see what I find.

pretty much any passenger car application will have a 28 spline T/L carrier. Mustang stuff is the most popular and most commonly available. used T/L carriers are all over E-bay, but they seem to vary widely on the condition.
Panther platform cars (CV/MGM/TC) got traction lock too. I found my 3.55 locker (K code) under a 84 town car in the salvage yard.
some police cars have the locking rear end also.

However, would highly recommend you spend the money and completely rebuild anything you buy used.
