Finally busted open my failing LCM yesterday and repaired it. Have to thank Mrs. Fenz as well, she did the soldering (Notice the Hello Kitty located in many of the pictures) and under dash work (cheap Asian labor \:D).

LCM Opened up with old relay removed.

Close up of the board with old relay removed.

Pre-made harness that I ordered with the wires labelled.

Reverse side of board after old relay removed/prepped for new wires (if you like the nail polish, I can ask her what color it is so you can buy some).

New wires installed onto the board.

Top view of LCM closed back up with wires routed out.

Side view of completed project with wires routed out.

Zip-tied new relay to the kick panel bracket, headlights came on first try, even looked a bit brighter!

2 notes:

1. Make sure you have a corded soldering iron, the cordless one we started with took forever. Had we bought the correct equipment to begin with, the whole thing would have taken maybe 2 hours going very slowly and carefully.

2. The 14 ga. wire was pretty thick to route into the old holes and had to be trimmed a bit.

Hope it helps!

I use a butane powered soldering gun which works great, but those "cold heat" guns really do suck.

Is the solder on the top side of the board spill thru from soldering on the back?

In the pics with the new wires attached? Yes. We ended up running to Home Depot at 945 pm last night to get a higher powered iron, and I know this is the first thing soldered in quite some time, but it works! And even with the new iron and relays and socket, less than $50 instead of a $500 new LCM.

I have to admit, I was a little worried but they popped right on first time. I figure some of these pics might help someone trying to muddle through it, probably could be combined with the BOK write up maybe.

Just an update:

Have run the headlamps for 10-12 hours in the last few days, no flickering, no failures or shutoffs. Repair is good to go.

^^^^ x100!

These pics would be a great addition to the bok thread. I know I'll be looking for them when mine starts to fail!

The tricky part of the process was getting all the old solder out. I used a spring loaded Radio Shlock solder sucker. You have to heat the solder so it melts and then, very quickly, put the solder sucker flush to the board and push the "trigger".
I've done two. One with a remote relay, and another just replacing the relay. They are $5.00 from Mouser Electronics, but that will probably fail someday, too.

That's why I did the external socket with the relay on mine, I ordered a couple spare relays at the same time. They are riding in my toolbox. I think the socket and 3 relays ran about $12 plus shipping.

We used the soldering braid to remove the old solder. It took quite a bit of heat to get the most stubborn bits removed.

This is great, The only thing that remains a mystery is what kinds of relays could I use?
