I've also been looking for an overhead console. I don't want something too long because I want to keep the dome light. Just something to go between the two visors with maybe a compass/cd compartment/shades holder. I also need a good mounting method because the headliner is loose in the front and sags a little between the two visors. Pretty sure it's because of what the CHP had mounted there before.

...I had a marauder overhead but i couldent get it to work it started where the hole ended(didnt solve my problem) I did the same exact thing LMAO. I ended up selling mine because my main reason for getting it was to cover the ticket light hole. X2 on the Explorer overhead though, it looks like that would cover the spot.

The earlier 2003 models had a "long OHC" which was the same as a short version but with a dome light and sunglasses storage cubby added to the rear. When installed, the front edge of the "long OHC" is at the windshield header, and the back edge is about over the seat backs and headrests. I located a "long OHC" from a 2003, and was able to fab up a mounting arrangement and install it in my 2004. Maybe this could solve your dilemma... For whatever it might be worth, here's the "long OHC":

hehehe yea bud i would love to do that but there is just no way to do a good writeup on that project. i had to re-do that project about 4 times myself so i never really found a perfect solution to it.

Ok, I have the smaller OHC. My question is, how do you remove it? The only fastener I could find was the stainless phillips on the forward side. After removing it, what's next? I gave it a little tug but couldn't get it to budge. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I gave it a little tug but couldn't get it to budge. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Here's how I did the removal on mine: Take out the screw up by the windshield, and tug on the console. A little leverage with a stiff 3" wide putty knife might help a little. If you replace the existing "short console" with the "long console" from a 2003, the long one will pop into the existing clips on the front. You'll need to fab up a method of anchoring up the rear, though. G'Luck!!
