Stupid Ford.

Quote:
U.S. Ford Ranger Production to End December 22, UAW Says

After almost 30 years, Ford Ranger production will end Dec. 22, according to the United Auto Workers 879s June-August newsletter. Chapter 879 covers factory workers at Ford's Twin Cities assembly plant where the Ranger is built.

"We are scheduled to run until December 22, 2011. The Leadership of Twin Cities Assembly Plant and its members thanked the UAW and Plant leaderships for their support during these difficult times for our plant," said the newsletter.

The 1983 Ford Ranger which started production in January 1982 was a replacement for the Ford Courier, which was based on the imported Mazda B-Series small truck. Ford wanted a scaled-down, lighter version of its full-size F-Series pickups that could work hard, get good gas mileage and compete head-to-head against small Japanese trucks such as the Datsun and Toyota pickups, and the U.S.-built Chevrolet and GMC S-Series pickups from GM.

More than 7 million Rangers have been built during its lifetime.

Ford hasn't announced a replacement for the U.S.-built Ranger. Instead, the Ford F-150 with its new 3.7-liter V-6 is the most direct replacement. However, an all-new Ford Ranger for global markets outside North America goes on sale later this year.

So much fail. Especially the part about how they are making a new Ranger for everyone else. It's probably got a super efficient diesel too.

Looks like it should be called the Ridgeline or Frontier. Oh, wait, Honda and Nissan already made those lame trucks.

Except the Nissan is actually good as, you know, a truck drug and the Honda is a pilot w new skin.

The Frontier is a great "little" truck. They sell surprisingly well even in import shy Kansas.

The Ridgeline is a unibody SUV with open cargo space. The Frontier led the way for all of these lame plasticky trucks. I liked it when trucks were more rugged. Although, I don't hate the Raptor so much.

I want to get an 86 or 87 Ranger and put a more modern six in it.

Plasticy? Really? wtf it's one of the few small trucks that is decent and could go offroad. Every other truck in that class, ranger included is terrible.

The Tacoma is a far superior truck. I liked the Nissan hard bodies but I could just never get on board with the Frontier. And yes, they were the first ones that took a pickup and wrapped it in plastic.

I almost got an XRunner instead of my Grand Marquis. I just didn't want to pay up.

Well, I'm not surprised the Ranger is getting the ax, since the last time it got a major overhaul was during the Civil War. I am surprised Ford is abandoning the small pickup market, though. Considering how well they do selling F-150's, you'd think a new Ranger would be a high priority. One of the few product moves on Ford's part in recent years that has me thinking "WTF?"

Yes, inferior steel was used on the frame, snapped in half right where the cab meets the bed.
