4.6l to 302 5.0l engine swap

My engine block is cracked on my 2000 crown vic and I was wondering if a ford 302 5.0l engine could replace my stock 4.6l SOHC. Also I would put a carb on the engine, how much mpg would I lose.
The 302 is shorter by 3 inches, length is the same, but the width is about 6 inches smaller maybe 9in. I forget. Anyways I wanna know if I can swap out the engines wih relatively no major hassles or complications. I already figure I have to move the motor mounts
If I can do this is it wise to do so? Is there a better alternative? Should I just get a replacment engine from the junkyard. Any help is appreciated

Whats Kommifornia?
Well I have the tools and skill and can make time for this. Although I have Repaired and Replaced an engine before I have never swapped two different kinds so I have no experience in custom fab and welding, hopefully I wont have to do too much. So I hope there are no complications but it could be a new adventure for me.
I am completely car less right now but I would like to upgrade my engine to a 5.0L and dont mind being car less to do so. Since my engine must come out anyways I might as well improve my car.
Also I could just buy a used block and transfer all my other engine parts onto it. I just dont know if thats a good idea for the long run. I know its much cheaper though.
Also another idea if I upgrade my engine to a newer used 4.6L which year should I get and I prefer a DOHC instead of my current SOHC
Thanks Bangster for the input

LOL even a stock HO 5.0 is a downgrade from a PI 4.6
A 5.0 swap is hard enough in a AOD equipped 92 A 2000 needs a pile of parts from a 86-91 and a 5.0 won't bolt to your transmission
Get a used 4.6 even a 2011 will fit with some parts swapped over from your 2000. Exhaust manifolds oil pan and engine mounts all changed on 2003

How are you going to put an older motor into a newer car, and drive it in California?

If you want a bigger engine, you could also just grab a 5.4

Some of us don't agree... Problem is all the pieces to make it fit... Explorers excepted, most 5.0 were OBD-I and as also mentioned the 4.6 has a goofy bellhousing bolt pattern so you'd need to swap the transmission to one that will mate to a 5.0/5.8... Now that I've mentioned the 5.8, if you were serious, I'd go that route... A big Windsor with a good set of heads(even a fair set) will kick any NA(normally aspirated)4.6 into next week... All this said, if it has to pass emissions, forget the whole thing... Emission Nazis would fail it as soon as they opened the hood... And for you guys that "think" a 4.6 is better, my full weight/option '88 T-Bird with a Trick-Flow headed 5.0 has run [email protected] on a cool evening and at 75*/80* would run [email protected] all day long... Yes the Bird is probably 400Lb lighter than a panther, but hauling the extra weigh still should run a 13.7... Yeah your comeback will be, "with heads & cams a 4.6 can make similar power to a 5.0" and just how much does those cost compared to the Windsor?

^^^ I'll agree with the Windsor. They do make great power and cost less to mod.

I clicked on this hoping to see a DOHC 5.0L discussion. Needless to say I was disappointed Save your money (and aggravation) and just drop another 4.6L in there!

Yeah after some thinking and research Ive decided to not put a 5.0L in it and put a 5.4 instead and use my 4.6 heads and buy an HPS intake and shorties. Since I will already have the engine dissasembled should I put and other relatively inexpensive parts on it to give it more HP. Think 1,000 or less. When I do things, I like to do them right the first time and go all out relatively speaking for someone who works a minimum wage job haha. I dont do half-ass jobs. Basically I wanna get the most HP I can for my dollar, value HP. And yes I know upgrading motors arent cheap, but with time I will improve it.
So anyways any suggestions?
Also thanks for the link^^^ Man California can be lame sometimes, but livin in the Sierra nevadas allows me to put the pedal down without looking for flashing lights.

However they did use the 5liter up in 2000 in the explorers though you will need to do some fancy wiring tricks to get her to work with all the OEM smog equipment. Mine is a 1985 swapping in a 97 5liter from a explorer. I'll need all the smog equipment from the ex before I can pass. BUT it is do-able.
