A friend came at my house to check his car today and he show me recent repair bill

He got his 2 rear axle wheel bearing replaced at a "cheap" garage and I saw on the bill that they put standard 80w90 oil and they havent put the trac loc additive

Question is: do I absolutly need to put 75w140 oil or i can simply just add the additive??

I had a tag on mine that read "75W140 Syn Oil Only". I'd imagine if it needed the additive, there would be a tag. What's the axle code on the door sticker?

I hope mine doesn't get addicted.

My factory service manual says that the additive is only needed for Trac Loc axles. If you have Trac Loc then you need 4oz. of additive in there.

The factory manual also says that you should run 75w140 for severe duty and 75w90 for regular duty. I put some 75w90 Mobile 1 in mine.

The manual says that it needs 5 pints of oil. It doesn't say anything about total capacity if you use additive. Mine has no additive and the oil started coming back out when I had gotten about 2.3 quarts in. I don't know if I over filled it or if I under filled it because I filled it while it was still elevated.

Axle code X5 is for a 3.27 Trac-Lok, so yes...it needs the friction modifier additive. Probably be a good idea to step up to synthetic also, but it's not vital if he doesn't give it heavy-duty use.

You don't say what year the friends car is. It is hard to say what oil to use. If it needs the 75w-140 there should be a tag on the axle stating so. 2.3 qts is really close to 5 pints.

Yeah but the fluid should not come all the way up to the fill hole.
