I'm finally getting the old girl apart. This will be the start of a stupid-huge thread (I like starting those) that will give a play-by-play of the HO/T5 swap into my 1991 P72. Today is day 1, October 18, 2003, and I have begun removing the accessories from the pansy 5.0 currently installed. I have removed all the driver-side accessories and brackets, alt, PS pump, and intake tract, as well as disassembled the TB/EGR spacer ass'y so I can have it bored to 63(?) mm. Began the passenger accessory removal, ran out of time before the A/C compressor surrendered.

Tech Question of the day:

What the &@%@!* am I supposed to do when I need an EGR spacer larger than 63mm? Stang parts don't swap here.

Wish me luck.

I am guessing you are staying EFI, if so what are your plans for the car? Just upgrading to HO specs and adding a T-5?

I don't have a digital camera at the moment, but I'm going to buy a cheapie as soon as I get to more interesting parts of the swap that have not been previously documented, I.E. the floor shifter and pedal installations and the actual engine install process.

The destination of the car for now will be a nearly stock 5.0L HO speed-density EFI engine with a stock T5 and 3.27 open rearend. Immediately thereafter will be a limited slip of some kind, hopefully a Torsen-type helical gear unit, but more realistically a stock Traction-Loc, with perhaps a step to 3.55 or 3.73 gearing depending on how it performs with the milder rearend.

Next will be a MAF conversion. I have two meters on hand but no computer as yet, followed by a headswap or port work on the E7s, with an intake, throttle, spacer, and MAF to match. I will be staying with the stock HO cam permanently as I am not willing to compromise idle quality, though a swap to 1.7 rockers is possible. I may also consider a junkyard turbo project if I get really ambitious, or perhaps a Kenne Bell type blower if I get really rich. I'm not a big fan of centrifugal blowers, as far as I'm concerned they are the worst of both worlds when it comes to boost. I'll be keeping the T5 until it breaks. If I wear it out, I'll rebuild it, and if I break it, I'll try to score a cheap T56 or 3550 to replace it.

Exhaust will be stock Mustang headers and a stock Stang catted H-pipe, cheapo no-fiberglass turbo mufflers, black side exit pipes if I'm cheap or maybe slash-cut stainless tips out the rear if I find a little dough for it.

Interior will remain mostly stock, perhaps dyed to black, with a set of late Japanese-car bucket seats since we Americans still can't seem to make a decent set of chairs with reasonably firm padding. I have considered entirely replacing the instrument cluster with a street-rod type gauge package, including the speedo, but I like the cop-car chic of the stock 140 speedo also. I have a few interior issues to repair, and I'll be retaining the stock rear bench seat, and leaving the door handles off of the rear doors. The stock rubber floor will remain, and I will likely add cruise control and power locks.

I already have a Kenwood CD player, Infinity 10" sub, and an 85Wx4 RMS amp to install, with a nice set of 6.5" component speakers up front and JBL 6x9s in the rear. Sweet, but not too loud, just tight and clean.

Paint will remain white for the forseeable future, with a good trim-off all over repaint to freshen the looks. I have a few door dings to fill and I need a new passenger headlight bezel and header panel, both are cracked. There is no rust anywhere. My car also never had a spotlight, so I only have a few antenna holes to fill. I'm going to keep the dog-dish caps as well. Hopefully I can figure a way to upgrade the 6.5" rims to 15x8s or 16x8s while keeping fender clearance and the dog-dish caps. I'm aiming for 255 width all-season performance tires all around, regardless of diameter. I would like to enlist Stockton Wheel for this service, but it's more than likely I'll be staying with 225/70s on the stock 15x6.5s for a long time, due to my low budget.

Comments?

Sweet, sweet, sweet!!!!

1.Supposedly a 65mm t.b. unit will still work just fine with the egr spacer bored to 63mm. No air issues there. (SUPPOSEDLY)

2. I recommend dynomax super turbo's for the exhaust. Approx 30+ a piece real quiet at first, but will open up. As for fiberglass blow outs, they're supposed to be real good, I have them love the sound (now) and have no issues with the fiberglass.

3.As for wheel clearance you should have no issues with 15X7 or 8's. Keeping the dogdishes may be a problem though. You could send your wheels out to be widened. Or you may consider using trying a "steel smoothie wheel" try
www.wheelvintiques.com or www.petepaulsen.com . Paulsen's cheaper I think. They're real old school like 50's, but with those you could keep a chrome cap and just paint the outerwheel black, giving you pretty much the same look. Should cost you less than $250.00 for all 4.

good luck on your project, stay focused ! I'm pretty much right there with you, time and work wise.

cheers!

I think once you have to bore the TB too big for stock, you could either have a new one made out of billet or find a way to adapt the CV throttle cable bracket to a Stang TB.

Pics are now available of this stage.

I'll throw another batch up here when I have more news.

Here's a little style idea I had. Opinions? Of course, the engine plate will be refinished with the spray-paint-it-and-sand-off-the-tops-of-the-letters-and-then-clearcoat-it method. And you had no idea that was even a method.

I knew two years ago when you showed up here that you were just a flash in the pan. Never mind that you've done almost everything else before me, I still win. There is still a small but significant chance I might fail, but not before I go with an aftermarket roundy-round racer hydro clutch setup, hopefully mounted on the floor like an F1 racer/VW Beetle. That would be really wierd.

PS Dammit Epi, reduce that picture in width so my thread stays pretty. This will probably go on for six months.

I really doubt I'm going to be all that fast. Even with a little timing bump, intake, and exhaust mods, I doubt I'll make much better than 235 HP. I'll be lucky for a 15-flat run in a 3800lb car with my 235lb ass in the seat. We'll see how she runs. At least I'll be able to waste most of you suckas. Maybe Seb will give me his doorstop I mean paperweight I mean 347. What I really want is a car as fast as my old '95 GT convertible, a high 14 sec car.
