Hey guys,
I was wondering, my 1997 MGM came equipped with a speed limiter and kicks in at 100 mph. The moment it reaches 100 mph, the engine kind a hesitates a bit and remains at this speed.
I want to cruise the Autobahn in Germany with no limiter.
Is this limiter something only export cars came equipped with? If not, how do I remove this?
Thanks!
Eelco

Strange my '96 doesn't hit the limiter 'till around 110mph. Anyway the limiter can be removed with a tune. All Panthers have a limiter set between 100 and 135mph depending on year and equipment (police package getting the higher limiter). I wouldn't think one of these boats would do much more than 150mph stock, you'll have too find out for us.
Before you go removing the limiter, be sure your tires can handle high speeds. The Michellin Symmetries that come stock are only rated for 120mph.

My understanding is that you'll need a Po-Leece driveshaft too. Apparantly, the Civilian Crown Vics have driveshafts that are not properly balanced or are constructed in such a way as to no be stable over 110mph and that's part of the reason they are limited. The limiters on these things seem to be all over the place: My Wife's P-74 HPP 94 would shut off at 110. My 94 P-71 (my old Patrol Car would max out at about 125 when it was my patrol vehicle because the trans was geared lower than stock and it had a big Streethawk light bar. Without the lightbar, it would run a speedo indicated 130-ish. It never hit a limiter, it just would wind out and that's as fast as it would go. My 2001 Patrol Car saw 139 on RADAR (I was running after a Vette laaate one night, with no other trafic on the road, the speedo indicated just at 140) it never hit a limiter either (I never got close to him so I let off) though they are supposedly limited from the factory at 127 I think. All of the cars I ever drove at the Sheriff's Office would pull past 130 on the speedo without gettin ginto the limiter except for my 94, we didn't make a habit of it and it really needed to be something like an Officer Needs Assistance call for us to run like that. Rumor had it that one of the 97's went 157 mph according to it's computer. I don't kow if that is something that can even be retrieved from the car's computer but one of the mechanics said they could pull that info up whenever they wanted to. My 2001 P-71 I drive now shuts off at 125 speedo indicated.

Even with the MMC or Aluminum driveshaft, the driveshaft can polevault after 15-20 minutes of operation at 129, as Ford's tests found out.
I read this somewhere on here, don't remember where tho...

I also heard about the wind dynamics and such, where if you hit a certain speed, due to it sitting so high off the ground the front end will start to lift as well...without some sort of spoiler on the front at least.

I miscalculated the max speed, it is 105 when the limiter kicks in. But anyway, reading all the above, I think it would be best to just let it sit as is, if I want to enjoy my car a while longer.....
Thanks all for you replies!

I don't kow if that is something that can even be retrieved from the car's computer but one of the mechanics said they could pull that info up whenever they wanted to. With live data scanning you can retrieve live vehicle speed, but I'm not sure about after the fact. '97 is quite possibly the fastest p-71 top speed wise, they were Aero body which are aerodynamically stable, even at high speed. They also had 3.27 RAR, aluminum drive-shaft and an aggressive tune. An '97 HPP Grand Marquis is potentially just as quick, it has the same axel ratio, the only difference is HPPs have the steel drive-shaft which isn't balanced as well and the tune is less aggressive. I can tell you first hand that an Aero Grand Marquis dose not get too light at high speeds, it is actually quite stable. Compared to my Malibu which would get light at anything more than 85mph, the Marquis is very stable.

I read this somewhere on here, don't remember where tho... If it worries you, install a driveshaft loop... I have one on my T-Bird...

Thats most cars. The Op's in Germany though. The tires on his car are probably already Y-rated or whatevers 2 notched down from a Z-rated tire.

betcha that buick would pass the century mark in a hurry. that thing even LOOKS fast just sitting at the curb. It does, 370 hp and 510 torque! It is really powerfull with the 455 in it. Sold it 3 weeks ago and bought the '77 MGM in return. It was half the price of what I got for the Riv. Anyone knows what the 460 of my 1977 MGM is good for? I heard it only has about 210 hp due to emission restrictions. No easy way to tickle it more I guess?
