I am really surprised nobody else has done the $100 MZT

https://www.crownvic.net/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=2619560&#Post2615226

Worked for months now, and I swapped the stock PCM/airbox back in to get inspected (Mass OBDII test includes a VIN check which would have failed)

Ok, maybe I can clear things up.

98-02 panthers all have the same airbox, 70mm maf(with bolt on housing), and ziptube design, some models have resonators on the intake tube, but other than that, the same.

all 2003 panthers also have the same 98-02 airbox/maf/tube setup, except the marauder, which got an 80mm MAF(bolt in housing) and a unique tube(that fits the twin throttle body) and specified a deeper higher-flow air filter(fits in the same box though)

starting in 2004 is when things can get confusing. 04 civilian models retain the same 98-02 airbox, MAF, and tube. 04 marauders remained unchanged. 04 P71 get an airbox with a built-in 80mm maf housing that untilizes the new global MAF sensor and a straigter and larger tube, and specs the higher flow filter, these changes to the 04p71 increased factory horsepower ratings from 239 to 250.

the new global MAF sensor was standardized on ford vehicles in 2005, with all vehicles getting the new connector, and the cartridge style sensor, these sensors are not just used by fords, but by many other auto manufactures. the pinout on the new connector is the same as the old one, the middle 4 wires are for the MAF, and the outer two are for the IAT.

for 2005, all panthers got drive-by-wire throttle, which deletes the idle air control valve used on earlier models. the valve used in 2004 and earlier models used one of the two ports on the tube, the other is for the PCV system. As such the tube was redesigned for 2005, with only one port, the civilian models continue to have the 70mm MAF housing, but get the updated global cartridge MAF sensor, the 05+ police continue to get the 80mm MAF housing and a larger tube with the 11hp increase over the dual exhaust equipped civilian.

so lets talk about upgrades:

for 98-03(all, except marauder) - 04 (all, except p71 & marauder):

Airbox/MAF housing:
the marauder airbox will be the best direct fit, the 03/04 marauder have the same MAF connector as the 98-03 so it will plug right in, and it has the 80mm MAF. Marauder airbox's are hard to come by, so another good option is the 04+ P71 airbox/maf, it will have the 80mm MAF, but will use the global MAF and connector, BlueOvalChips (BOC) sells adapaters that can be used to plug your older MAF harness into a newer MAF sensor, or you can get the harness from a donor car and splice the wires onto your harness and plug it in.

Tube:
Realistically you only want the tube from the 04 P71, which is the only tube that is a direct fit to your 80mm MAF and has 2 ports for your IAC and PCV. the 04 P71 tube is getting harder to find. you could try using the 05+ p71 tube and cutting an additonal hole in it.

04+ (only p71/police):
no need to upgrade, your MAF/tube combo is the one everyone else wants!

05+ (all, Except P71/Police):

Airbox/MAF:
you want the 04+ P71/Police airbox, it has the 80mm MAF housing and has the same global MAF sensor as yours.

Tube:
you want the 05+ p71/police tube, its larger and fits the 80mm MAF housing.

To everyone switching from a 70mm to an 80mm MAF, you will need a tune! if you dont you'll be loosing power rather than gaining, you'll also get rich/lean codes.

BOC makes a good tune and knows these cars well.

Also, if you dont have dual exhaust, adding the 80mm maf wont be nearly as effective, the police models got dual exhaust standard which is why the 80mm MAF is more effective to them, I highly suggest swapping to dual exhaust before upgrading to the police/80mm MAF and tube.

The car actually has dual exhaust..and from what I can tell, it actually doesn't have any mufflers at all! Not sure if it's helping me or not, but it sounds absolutely amazing!

From what I can tell, previous owner of car cut out the mufflers and just installed 2 resonators (one on each side). The way I see, I should be pretty unrestricted as far as the exhaust goes. It DOES have The factory cat converters and headers though, from what I can tell.

Ok, so, I just got off the phone with BOC. They are basically saying unless I upgrade my differential gear ratio that swapping the throttle body is a waste of time and I will be losing HP and torque.....

Ugh, never mind, just did some more research and looks like I would still need to upgrade my rear end. :-(

You don't need to upgrade the rear.

most performance mods will increase power at higher rpm, if you have steeper gears then you will get to that higher rpm faster and can make more use of your mods. but if you do all of your sporty/racing at freeway speeds then forget gears. if you want to drive stoplight to stoplight gears will make a big difference.

as an example, my Marauder and my Vic. The marauder is stock, rated 302hp, has 3.55rar but has much taller tires than the Vic(counting tire size its ratio is equivalent to 3.27 when compared to the tires on the Vic) the Vic rated at 250hp plus minor bolt ons, and which has 3.73rar. from a stoplight my Vic is much faster, but anywhere after 40mph the Marauder is much faster. on the freeway the Vic does not stand a chance, from a stoplight the Marauder does not stand a chance.

Well basically at this point I don't know if I am better off sending the 75mm back to summit and swapping it for the 70mm or if I am better off just not changing the throttle body at all at this point. It sounds like I can do the plenum and the 80mm MAF and all that... Just not the throttle body I wanted to add.

I was thinking about doing the gears myself but Lonnie is saying I guess you need a bunch of special tools and I most likely wouldn't be able to do it. And I don't know anyone who works in a shop who could do it for cheap. Also I guess he is saying I would need to change the drive shaft as well which makes it that much more expensive.

Do you have any idea if he is anymore partial to the 70mm TB's? It sounded like he just flat out wanted nothing to do with the 75. Like I said, I certainly don't have the money to drop into a rear end right now and I'm not sure what would be a better route... Either 70mm or not changing it at all? What do yall think?

Just toss the 75mm on. Port your upper plenum and install your new lower plenum, then add the 04p71 maf and tube. Forget whatever lonnies telling you to do. Just do what you want, then have him build a tune for you and buy the maf adapter from him.

Trust me, you don't want to rebuild your own rear end, you don't even want to have a shop do it, make sure you find a specialty shop that does only differentials, its usually in the name. in my area there are 2, randys ring and pinon and northwest differential. building a diff right definitely gets spendy, parts and labor will quickly get over 1k, could go near 2-2.5k if you pull out all the stops.

Well the only thing I bought was the 75mm TB and the 75mm upper plenum I believe. The elbow that connects directly to the throttle body is what I got. And I am still waiting on the zip tube and MAF.

It just sounded like he pretty much wasn't going to tune it for me, I mean I guess I could tell him to do it anyways I just don't want it to get sloppy or something because he's mad about having to do it or doesn't agree with it or whatever.

Yeah, when he was telling me I had to do it and spending more time on the phone with him it sounded like at least a $2K project..which I certainly don't have the money for, obviously was not my intentions to change the rear end when changing out my TB. And no one had mentioned it to me on here so it was all news to me.

Like I said, I am open for whatever at this point, just want to do what is best for my baby.

Then forget him. Lidio makes good panther tunes too.

I was somewhat disapointed with my boc tune.

If you have 2.73 then I will agree gears will be allot of bang for your buck, but there's no logic is saying not to do a plenum tb and tune without gears.

Can always find a used 3.27 axle from a wrecking yard and swap that for 6-700$

Who is lidio exactly?

Yeah, he was pretty much saying if I swap it can't be anything less then a 3.73 and that with my stock rear doing the throttle body would be completely pointless and make me lose like 20 hp And 20 off my torque or something like that...

Obviously I don't want to lose power or anything and be in a worse spot then I am now.. So I didn't know if it was best to put in a 70mm TB instead or just not to swap the TB at all and keep the stock one...gah, I don't know, so many decisions! Haha

Straight up bs.

Swapping to 75mm throttle might drop peak torque slightly but will increase peak power.
