Purchased a tank online only to find out they were using the same tank for 2005 interceptors as a 2006 on the website. Its a Spectra tank, I was wondering if anybody has any information on the differences between 05 and 06 and bottom line, can this work?

As far as I know the tank design stayed the same from 98 to 2011........it could even be the same tank that's in 92 to 97 cars.

Any tank from any year box/aero should physically fit. Only things that ever changed were the fuel pumps, the various sensors/valves that sit on top of the tank, and the filler neck. AFIK, all '03+ tanks are the same.

Appreciate the input. I'll try to post pics and details of this succes/debacle assuming I don't get lazy and pay someone else to do it.

So an update on this swap
the tank came out rather smoothly. Nothing broken, few headaches. Had go cut the wires connecting to the pump as the plug was wedged under the brake line and was unreachable, but a simple snip and splice fixed it. However, that is when I discovered the difference between 2005 and 2006 tanks

The large fuel vapor recover valve changes from a twist and lock to a push in. So the twist and lock won't work in the new tank. I'm ordering the newer part from Ford and hoping it comes with the gaskef for the push in, but it's doubtful. I cannot find a part number for the push in type gasket. This is probably going to become a make it fit problem, but I'm hoping the new part has what is needed. Updates when it comes in

The bottom line-2006 tanks fit a 2005, but there is one minor change that is a major headache.

It should also be noted that this change happened in the middle of the 2005 model year. So half the 05 have different types of valves on top of the tank. Anyone doing this should check their VIN for the build date.

Make it fit solution: cut the old hole out, weld to the new tank. Have to cut the hole bigger on new tank. Even if you have to buy a welder to do this it's better than paying $500 for the Ford tank. Obviously it would be ideal to have a donor tank to get the 06 grommet. But I'm impatient and a bit unlucky so there it is.

Here are the difference in valve. Old is green, new is tan

Literally everything else is interchangeable. This part set me back a week waiting for the new part (that didn't come with the grommet, nor could I order the grommet from my local Ford dealers or auto parts store)

Finished product. Plenty of sealant on top because if it's worth doing its worth over doing. NEVER AGAIN! this tank dies with the car.

You could have coated/painted the whole tank at this point as it will rust like any other one.

the ford one was pricey but is was alredy coated.

It was discussed. I get a 3 year warranty from Spectra and won't likely have the car for another 3 years. I'll risk it.

My tank is leaking and I'm looking to order a Spectra replacement. My build date is 02/05... is that before or after the half year change? It's a 2005 PI FYI.
