Well, we did figure out that the drivers side of my car had been repainted at one point, and his car has had some work done too.

that happens on my 01 Merc all the time...along with the speedo reading 0 for no good reason

My 96 GMQ had that problem, turned out to be an intermittent on the connector to the output shaft speed sensor on the transmission (car uses that for vehicle speed/distance, so it affects speedo/odometer and gas mileage meter). The electrical pins are round, but by squeezing them a bit with pliers, I tweaked them to be a bit oval in shape (not so much as to flatten them...just squeeze a little bit). This made them have a better contact with the still round female mating pins they plugged into, and got rid of the intermittent.

Tried my spare PCM in the 08 today and it works even better than the original PCM. Transmission shifts better. The spare PCM came from a non-traction control car. TC still works so TC likely resides in the ABS module and could by plug and play. One of these days the Sport is going to get factory TC.

Ordered 2 new Motorcraft ignition coils, Accel (blue) wires and Autolight spark plugs.

Was having some 30-40mph stutter, checked the coils, 2 clys were reading low resistance and there is a tiny crack in the housing, left bank.

I don't think its on the transmission side of things, my speedometer and everything else still works, its just the MPG reading that goes full derp. Or, like I said, its the most efficient car ever. I think its just the cluster, bad connection between boards, since its the old school digi-dash with 3 separate boards and screens. My buddy's '97 Town Car Signature was the same way, except his rarely read correctly as where (at least for now) mine is reading properly 98% of the time, his had 50k more miles than mine does.

As for what I did to it, well, I got a CEL. The infamous P0455 that it throws every few months. It probably should have it all the time seeing as 1/2 the EVAP system is on the side of the road somewhere, but it doesn't seem to care about that. Or the missing rear cats. While I had my computer hooked up and the engine running, I idled it to see what temp the PCM commands the electric fan on, its not until 220*. A bit warm IMO, but that never was supposed to be the primary fan, its supposed to have the clutch fan as primary and the e-fan as an auxiliary fan with the AC an also if the clutch fan can't keep up. I haven't decided what I want to do about the fans. I don't want to invest in another controller to kick it on at a lower temp, so I'll probably re-wire them so both fans come on with the PCM command aux fan. It'll stay cool that way, just doesn't come on till warmer than I like.

Drove it to the pick-n-pull and found something for a member at Panther Nationals, and a new manual cover for me.

Also managed to get a pocket full of AC service port caps (for free laugh ), since I usually misplace them when working on customers cars.

Then fed it another $10 of ethanol free gas and added a can of Gumout cleaner wink

Dave, the car looks great good sir. I can't wait to see it in person Saturday. I put the new tstat in the super vic. That did the trick, no more overheating. I also got the A/C charged and figured out that since I swapped over the marauder harness, I needed a sensor in the dash. I found and installed after digging through the wreck. I also balanced and rotated the tires. Tomorrow my new door panel will be here and it gets a new windshield Wednesday. Then I can put my Roush windshield banner on and it's about as ready for the Nats as it's going to get.
