I finally upgraded my 60amp alternator that I was having issues with to 105 amps. Wasn't too hard really, consisted of pulling apart the alternator and swapping out a couple components. If I didn't already have a fairly new alternator in the car to bein with I'd probably have just gone out and got a higher output reman alternator but this way was a lot cheaper.

here's the contents of the kit: A beefier stator, rectifier, brush holder&brushes, as well as some assorted nuts/bolts/insulators.

3 small bolts and it pulls right apart.

Here's the whole thing pulled apart with the old stator/rectifier shown. From here it was pretty much the opposite of disassembly. The one complaint I have about the kit was that I had to solder the rectifier/stator wires up. Since they go in as a unit anyway I don't see why they wouldn't but it's not such a big deal. The wires are not exactly labeled the best either but it wasn't hard to infer where they went from their location and by looking at the old parts.

I put the upgraded alternator on this afternoon. Fired up the car and turned on the headlights, A/C(also activates the dual 12" cooling fans), and turned the blower to full. Voltmeter held right at 14v vs the slightly below 12 it had before. It did drop a bit once the car went off cold idle and slowed down but that's not too big of a deal. I may put on a smaller pulley or maybe just not worry about it at all.

Nice Jaime, where did you get it and how much did it set you back? I would like to do that to the Fairlane alternator, since I'm going to be running dual electric fans too. Nice photos and explanation. I'm adding this to my favorite threads, for when I do it.

You might want to go check with the box people, but I think your 89 will have a different alternator that is internaly regulated vs externaly like our older ones.

Yes, it does have an internal regulator. That's when ford went as cheap as GM. Someone did get a pre 87 alt and got an old regulator. I'f it ever goes out again I may read up on that. The pops might know how. Second time in less than two yrs it had to be replaced.

God I love my Bardge body!

Thanks again for this post Jaime. I ordered the 105 Amp upgrade kit today, since I'll be putting dual Derale 13" electric fans drawing 50 amps! I'll let you know how I make out with it.

I think I need to go to a slightly smaller pulley on the ALT still. There's still a bit of a voltage dip at idle with most of the accesories on.

Jamie, how long did it take for that kit to arrive? I ordered it on 3/1 and it still isn't here yet. Email wouldn't go through, the phone was busy all day, and then I finally got a voice machine. I was hoping to have it this weekend, because I'm putting the dual electric fans in. All I have is an order confirmation from that day, and that's it.

I don't think it took me more than a week to get mine. I'd say either the shipping co is slow or something is wrong.

I just tried them one last time for the day, and I spoke to a human! He said the 105Amp Stators were on backorder, and he's expecting them in tomorrow. He said that was unusual, because they always have plenty in stock. At least I know it should be next weekend...thanks Jamie. Sorry I spelled your name wrong in the rest of these posts. I always forget which way it goes.
