Sorry to bring this back, but 2005 model year seems to be plagued with tranny issues and F150 and Expedition are no exception, which is where my emphasis is today. I do not want to join another forum to ask this as the powertrain is the same. What specifiaclly is the issue that caused these to go bad. I am seeming the "DIRECT CLUTCH" is what most people are mentioning.

Was at an auction and there were lots of 05 and 06 Expeditions that had bad trannies from 80k up to 120k. Thats way too early.

1.) What is the cause of the failure, an actually transmission component defect, or software defect.

2.) If replacing tranny with a reman, is there any software updates that need done?

It sounds like he wants to buy an '05 and wants to know why they have problems.

I replaced the trans in my '95 CV with a Jasper rebuilt and it still had the sloppy shifts and shudder problems that most '92 to '97's have.

Define "Bad" no forward movement? no reverse? doesn't shift in/out of a particular gear?

The biggest issue I see on all of my rebuilds are failures from heat. adding an external cooler really helps. as far as programming goes, a Ford dealer can run the vin and see if any updates are available. Some aftermarket tuners are good, but few understand how to program the transmission correctly.

1.) I personally only owned two 05's that failed. One CV, when warm, the tranny would slip on takeoff only when warm.

2.) 2006 expedition ( built in 2005) that shifted perfect on way home from auction, next day it made it into first, then would just go into "slip", there were no other gears working.

I cannot elaborate on all the ones at auction other than there are more 05's than any other year.

From what i have experienced, normal wear in the valve body causes reduced line pressure and the forward clutch starts to slip and the clutch eventually fails. This is why I replace the shift valves and separator plate when I perform the Jmod.

the direct clutch (3rd gear) can fail, but this usually happens when vehicle tows/hauls too much weight for an extended period of time.
