Following in the vein of the ever-popular "What did you do to your Panther today?" thread, I figured I may as well make one for PCs.

Today, I switched motherboards, threw in a GTX1060, got a 960GB Solid State Drive, and upgraded to Windows 10 Pro.

Which one? grin
This weekend, got my old server to boot. No matter what I did, for some reason it couldn't find the hard drive on power up, though if I booted from CD it could. Then I remembered how picky SCSI can be regarding placement along the cable. Moved the drive to the end right before the terminator, and voila!.

Then a software install failed. Looking into why, I discovered that the drive was full. I guess 4.5G just won't cut it anymore. laugh So, I'll be sticking in another drive or 2. I have a set that was originally a RAID array, which will have the great side benefit of making it even louder than it already is.

Configured it to share its internet connection via wifi since the reg wifi doesn't work so well at the corner of the house where I spend most of my time. The PC is wired so the wifi card in it was just unused anyway.

Finally started playing Life is Strange, and spent 3 hours using the Crash to Desktop spell in Magicka to prevent my buddy from keeping the Sword of Masters in his inventory by deleting him from the game repeatedly. Much laughter was had.

Got to band practice the other night and the bass player says "dude... my computer's f-cked up." Turned out he downloaded a legit program from a non-legit source that bundled it with a crappile of adware. Had it clean by the end of practice.

Beat Life is Strange and basically killed thousands of people at the end. Then refused to play CS:GO with my mates, because they kept spamming messages from various chat programs to ruin my recordings. Argh.

I upgraded the video card from a Sapphire 6970 to a Sapphire RX 480 OC. Significant upgrade. Love the speed.

Took one of the spare 120mm fans I have and "installed" it into the slave computer.

Core temps are down by about 15 degrees.

Got my samba server running again, so now my music/media share and itunes are playing nice together. Now I need to dig up my old phone and sync off of it, and then I have a bunch of stuff that needs downloaded from Google Play and imported.

LOL!

That's like my idea. I installed a wee 45mm fan inside the wife's new Windows 10 computer. It's a Asus Sabertooth TUF Mark 1. It has a Samsung PCIe nvme 950 SSD installed that was running around 130' F. just at idle. I stuck the fan on to the motherboard plastic shielding using double sided foam tape, and put some duct tape around it and down the sides to the foam tape too. I aimed the fan at the heatsinks I stuck on each of the memory chips. Now the temps are running 100' F at idle. But I have to periodically look through the back of the case with a flashlight to make sure the tape is holding. tongue I should come up with a better solution, but so far it eludes me...

But today's project was upgrading my Asus Maximus V Extreme desktop with a 525 GB Crucial SSD and then putting the old OCZ-Vertex 4 SSD as the new C: drive in the wife's Asus G73 Sw Laptop. All successfully upgraded with the help of Clonezilla and Paragon Free. cool

My laptop- Looked at it and the pile of parts I have for it. I still need a keyboard because the one I bought didn't work. My repaired hinges work fine. I have a new mid-chassis to replace the one in it that is broken in a few spots, I couldn't pass up the new one $7.50 used, but aside from a scuf on a corner, its basically new. Waiting till I have another keyboard and power plug to swap that cuz the whole thing has to come apart for the swap.

My neighbor's netbook- this has been my project. He gave it to me with no power adapter, so 2 adapters later I have one that fits. First one had the earlier Asus plug on it, too big, I already had one of those from my old netbook. Sent it back and got a genuine Asus adapter used on the eBays, great shape and it works. Its painfully slow, I swapped in the SSD from my old netbook which helped a ton, but there's no way around the 1gb RAM. It has a "maximum" of 2GB, but its DDR3, so my extras won't work. Might pull one of the 4gb cards from my laptop and see if it accepts it, MicroCenter has 4gb cards real cheap, so if it works I'll get the okay to buy one of those for it. It really needs it. All he wants it for is internet and occasional movie watching. Another issue is that the speaker doesn't work, so I'll have to investigate that. It only has 1 speaker, and audio still works via heaphones, so I'm not sure how much of a loss it really is. The Atom N570 is a capable enough processor, but they really choked this thing with the slowest HDD and no RAM.
