Mine snapped in the drive position. Lucky I have a good parking brake! Can't start it either unless you move the linkage, and it take a bit of oomph from under the car, since it is behind the cat.

It was hanging on by a thread, all rusted out. A new one is $50 and i replaced the column bushings too.

The maintenance schedule DOES say to lube this part every oil change or so. There is an exposed brass shackle. So it is best to coat it in axle grease.

I don't care to lube the new one, the old one lasted 20years and the car will be gone by then.

The nut had to be ground down with with those Dremel sanding drums.

I had this happen on my Yukon last year. I was checking the transmission fluid and bam the shifter started free styling back and forth without shifting anything. The end at the transmission disentegrated into white powder. Luckily it was in park.

Isn't the shift cable protected by some kind of plastic/rubber sheath? How would you be able to lubricate it?

My 2000 was on the lift getting a parking brake cable replaced. The actuator lever had seized so the cable snapped. Anyway, when the mechanic went to back the car off the lift, the shift cable snapped, right where it attaches to the shift arm on the transmission. It basically rusted in half. Fortunately, the shop was able to get a new one that day and put it all back together.

Just the metal eyelet and bolt. That is what rusted. Nothing moves but just protection from the elements.

I know it's an old thread, but could anyone point me in the right direction to find a new shift cable for an 03 Marquis? Not having any luck locating one. Thanks in advance
