I am rebuilding a 4r75e transmission for my 08 crown vic. the direct drum went together easily with minimal air loss during the air pressure test and the reverse drum leaks a little more than the direct drum but still engages fine. my issue is when air testing the forward drum after rebuild a lot of air is flowing from the center shaft area the clutch is engaging but it has a leak somewhere I can't figure out. when assembling the pump, reverse and forward clutch for testing I feel the forward gear slide threw all three of the reverse friction plates so as far as I can tell it is fully seated. also, all the seals and rings are new. please, somebody, help me this is driving me up a wall.

Not the transmission expert but did you use the special tools to install the seals? Also, you need to use transmission assembly lube liberally. As far as actual help go on YouTube there are some good videos online now showing the entire rebuild process. A new 4r70w video by a guy named Gary over in NY just uploaded a good one.

i'm doing the install watching transmission bench on youtube. i'm using transmission fluid like the guy in the video. no i didnt buy the seal guards their not realy required if you take your time plus i cant afford it after buying everything.im pretty sure the drum piston seals are fine i checked the shaft seals and they look good. the only thing i can think of is something isnt seated completly. i dont know its driving me up the wall.

Inspect the front pump stator sealing rings, the lower ones seal to stator to the inside of the forward clutch drum. Make sure you are using the latest style nylon butt cut rings and gaps are staggered on each ring.. Meaning turn the rings gaps 180 degree opposite of each other. also inspect the stator ring lands for any debris or burrs/nicks. I use a small nail file and clean up the machined surface so its not so sharp and makes it more smooth. Any nicks in the ring land will cause the ring to hang up and not expand fully, which leads to sealing issues.

blue rings from the video are pre-production. still in development. Video was to demonstrate how effective they are.

As I mentioned, make sure the pump stator ring lands are in good shape, they need to smooth and no nicks.

Make sure you have the right rings for your pump stator, they changed in 2004

Any updates?

Here is another seal installation tool that's cheaper. Some type of seal installation tool is recommended so the seals don't get damaged during installation.

Found another good 4r70w rebuild video as well:

The seal installer you linked to is for lip seals in the clutch drums.. and from my experience, they are garbage.
