Hey, guys. Have a question about my 2007 MGM LS. Today, for the first time in 2 months, I floored it merging onto the highway. It did not make any pre ignition sounds, until around 4,600 RPMs, it began to sound like marbles in a can, until it shifted around 90-ish MPH and then stopped. I floored it again from 60 MPH and again, it sounded like marbles in a tin can at 4,600 RPMs and above.

I floored it for a third time after getting of of the highway and now the knock is no longer there it seems. Would this possibly be carbon buildup? Car does not seem to have any vacuum leaks. Could me being feather footed cause this problem? I rarely let the car go above 2,000 rev's. Also, should I be worried about engine getting damaged from this pre-ignition occurring? I try to take care of my vehicles as much as possible and my OCD is driving me crazy over the thought that I have damaged something. Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks for the reply. I'll check into that. I remember when I put a CAI on my 2007 Ford F-150, it would detonate too, until the MAF finally evened out the air/fuel mixture.

I don't think you should worry about having damaged anything. Could have been carbon buildup, gummed up injector, who knows. Have you kept up on maintenance? Might be time for a fuel filter and spark plugs if they're original.
I recommend going WOT more often than 6x a year. You aren't gonna break it.

Thanks for the reply! Yes, I have kept up on maintenance, though I only just recently purchased the car. PO stated he would go 5-7k miles on oil changes, which I wasn't thrilled about, but it seems ok. I go about 4,500 miles, or so. Car doesn't seem to really use any measurable oil.

I used to get a similar sound on my 96 TC. I found that it was the slightest exhaust manifold gasket leak, couldn't be heard unless accelerating hard. Sounded pretty much exactly like what you're describing. You may want to check for that if the problem happens again
