Let me start off by saying: This is not for a Panther, but a 2013 F150.

Before anyone jumps down my throat, just pretend that I swapped a Ford 9.75" differential into my Grand Marquis.

As I said, it's a Ford 9.75" axle (Dana 60 clone).

The truck had 3.55s, and I got a set of 4.10s by SVL (a Dana aftermarket brand).
I installed all new pinion and carrier bearings (Koyo pinion bearings, Timken carrier bearings), and the installation specs are as follows:

Pinion preload: 25 in/lbs
Backlash: .012" (max allowable)

The whining is light, but it's definitely there. You can hear it during cruise (but not acceleration), but especially upon deceleration. If you've got the radio on, you wouldn't notice it, but I know this isn't right.

Here are some shots of the final patterns:

Sorry, I couldn't get the pictures to load.
Here's drive:

I wish I could post the actual pictures on here, but Imgur isn't letting me. Or this site isn't.

This site used to run a lot better before 2017...

Hard to say. I think pinion is too close.

Dixie, remember when the site was down for like 4 months a couple of years ago? That's when the picture attachment program broke and Vertical Scope has been unable or unwilling to fix it since then.

Yeah, I remember... I also lost a bunch of my attached pictures on here.

Anyway, do y'all think that reducing pinion depth and resetting the backlash would get rid of the noise?

It’s a Tricky thing to get right, kinda like Muddin drywall!!
We did my brothers 91 GT not long ago,had to take it out several times and repress again and again until we finally got it to hit right on the gears.Keep at it I think u are onto something.

Thanks for the input, guys.

After looking at the pictures, how much do y'all think I should reduce the depth?

I'm using a .027" shim right now; maybe take out .004"?
