The paint is clean for a cop car. The interior is clean for a cop car. Take that for what it is. Neither are perfect.

Looks like people are willing to pay $4500-5000 for a beat to [censored] vomit comet and it's a lot more perfect than that.

This, of course, was merely the semi-delirious notion of a fever-patient, but I remember that it struck me at the time as being eminently practical and feasible.

Wait a minute... are we talking about the POTM for February? That black car?

Then it's worth way more than $4250, at least in my market.

A black car, if the paint looks good, commands a premium on top of regular. I sold a really lousy paint 2011 black car with about 92K back in October for $4000. And I mean its paint was lousy.

Watching those prices on marketplace ppl would easily ask 6-8 grand for such a car. Not saying I would pay it, but I see those prices quite often.

I would bet if you put it online for 5500ish it will sell fast.

As I said in another thread, I just passed on an opportunity to buy a 2011 black car with 85k miles, no seat rips and full tint at $500. Overall the paint was iffy but better than that other black car that I sold for 4k and much worse than adam's. However, I calculated that the car needed at least $1500 in work besides my own elbow grease (which would have been considerable) so I passed.

They put it up for auction and the price is over a $1000 right now with time to go.

Go figure, people be crazy.

Adam should test the upper end of the waters for us and see what he can get.

I really don't know.

Everything works on the car (except the passenger door lock - actuator is fine, just...needs linkage hooked back up? Rivet is still there). Lots of new parts under the hood so it should be a good runner for a while.

It looks good with only the bare minimum of scratch-n-scrub car washes.

It cruises nicely.

I like it, but I don't love it. It's thirsty (20mpg max vs. a hardly-even-trying 23mpg that I'd get with my civilian cars).

Love the one you're with?

Two 2010 plain vanilla white P7B patrol cars in my area, normal run of the mill patrol cars, but with low miles (55k) just closed at auction this morning. One for just over $5k with fees included and the other for over $7k with fees included, because two tom turkeys decided to get in a foolish bidding war.

2010 white patrol P7B - 53k miles - fetches 7 GRAND at auction.

If that doesn't convince you that it's an overhyped sellers market, nothing will. No way is your car worth less than those.

BTW, car #9 and #10 in my signature were IDENTICAL to those two cars that just sold, and were bought from the same seller in February and March. I paid $2100 for one and $2400 for the second, flipped them for over $4k and thought I was stealing. Now with the hyped market it looks like I sold too low.

Wanna play again? I haven't done jack [censored] to this car other than drive it and it shows. But the market has changed and I'm looking to maybe offload it.

2010 CVPI
3.55 LSD
146k / guessing 3700hr but I haven't checked lately
J-mod
tinted head/corner lights
Addco front bar
clear plastic evidence boxes in the trunk
20% tint all the way around
subwoofer
old Kenwood BT audio receiver
Focus fogs
dual LED spots
intake manifold replaced 2020ish
wiper motor replaced 2020ish but acting intermittent in heavy rain now
battery replaced...uhh...2020 or 2021?
underhood AC components replaced 2020 & still blows cold
BFG summer tires have a couple seasons left
separate set of snow tires/wheels
cruise wheel added / cruise enabled
RKE enabled w/one programmed fob (but I can't find the fob now)
"flash lights when locked door closes" mod enabled

Passenger power door lock still doesn't work off switch or RKE - can hear the actuator, but it doesn't move the rod. Manual keyed entry works.

Driver's fender has continued to rust typical arch rust and the rear doglegs have very small rust spots starting. Otherwise, fairly clean underneath.

Bit of oil leak from the satellite filter - nothing on the ground, doesn't smoke, doesn't even really use oil between changes, nothing enough to worry me into changing it

I probably won't list it here. You all deserve a better car than an ex-Michigan vomit comet. But this is the most recent picture I have of it, taken just a few weeks ago.

Oooh boy, it's a totally different guessing game now, two years later in the spring of a new season.

I hear the news hype that used car prices are going up again. I saw them lull in my area last fall and during the winter they're dormant, so it's hard to tell. I am seeing signs that they're creeping up BUTTTTTT... if my personal activity is any barometer, guys are actively trying to unload their cars to me and I'll be trying to dump cars in spring. I now have eight in the personal inventory, not counting other working movie vehicles, 6 of which are designated to sell. So I've been buying all winter and now have to unload in spring.

So where will prices shake out? I dunno, but I can tell you this though...

... there is still a dearth of good P71's in my market and this is good news for any seller of a good car.

My scrutiny of your car flags the following points.

  • It's black, which people want. I don't like em but buyers do.
  • It looks good on the outside, how's the interior?
  • Tinted windows and tinted corners really help appeal.
  • I'd REMOVE the evidence boxes and keep 'em, ditto the LED spotlights. These are things we care about, but buyers don't. Replace with regular lamps if you've got 'em.
  • Rust is a relative ding in your area and your's sounds less than most.
  • The mileage is going to knock the price down somewhat, but won't stop it from selling to a young testosterone laden man with a few bucks in his pocket.
  • It's a later year, which pushes the price back up somewhat.

I just checked my local comparables and there is NOTHING for sale in it's category out year. Some much older cars, some unsorted cars, some overpriced cars, but nothing in your clean, fixed, attractive, decent, later model category.

Assuming no rust for my market or light rust for yours, I'm thinking I'd price it at about $5k to $5,500, tout this as a sorted car from someone who knows his cars, and see what you get. If it had 100k miles as opposed to 147 I'd say like $6k. You might eventually end up in the fours. Bear in mind I'm inflating a little for your market. It'd be in the 4's in my market.

Appreciate the comprehensive answer.

The car is not entirely well-sorted, but it still turns heads and gets comments wherever I drive it (moreso than the Marauder, infuriatingly enough) and goes down the road smoothly without any dash lights.

Regarding the interior, it's way better than a normal cop car, though I never did address the driver's seat mismatch that I thought would bother me.

The rust in the fender is something I'd have already addressed if I cared about this car like I have with my civilian cars. It absolutely would've been fixed already were this a CVLX or GMQ. In my stock, I've got a fairly mint black fender, and even considered putting it on last year, but opted not to due to it having Marauder trim on it and thinking "hmm, I'd rather save this for the car I actually give a crap about". Anyway, if I end up keeping the car, it looks like driver's side fenders are back in stock on RockAuto (for now, anyway) so I guess I could do that.

Honestly, $4k would be a dream.

Side question back to you: if this car was in your fleet as a movie car, would you also change (in addition to the rusted fender) the headlights back to stock? Like, would that make it more marketable?

You might want to list it at like $4800, just under the magic 5k mark to move it fast.

As for the small rust spots in that type of car, I'd "movie" fix them. Knock the loose spots, hit it with the metal fiber enmeshed bondo, grind it smooth, hit it with rustoleum rust inhibiting primer, paint and topcoat in spots as best you can.

A cheap mismatched "fix" is better than an open wound when selling. Telling the buyer that this fender can come on and off easily, unlike unibody cars, is a big workaround too.

The customers ALWAYS want our cop cars to have visible spotlights on the A pillar... and they never ever use them. So on half my cars I have them jury rigged and non-operative. My expedition has a Crown Vic Unity stuck in the hole, it's not the right fit and will work if I plug it in, but I don't.

It's odd what Producers/directors will pitch a fit about with cars. As I've said, an awful lot of cosmetic flaws don't show up on camera so we do "movie fixes". Bradvic's '97 white P71 is rather rusty and last summer when we were getting it ready for camera we just slapped Bondo on, smoothed it and hit it with rattle can primer that he had in his shop. Well, that shade of primer was such a good color match to the rest of the car, that we just left it... knowing it was a short term fix.

It worked, it looked great on camera and now it's rusting through and we've got another shoot coming up we'll have to fix it again.

But we never know what they'll pitch a fit about. We've had them reject a black police impala several times because when it arrived on set, it didn't look spiffy enough even though in photos it was fine. We had to tell the owner of that car we wouldn't be using it anymore unless he dressed it up.

On the flip side, I've had several producers tell me they LOVED my Sport with its leather seats and fancy interior even though these things are never seen. And it has tinted lenses and non stock LED tailights which no cop car would ever have, but they make it look more "movie undercover". They do, however, always want the dog dish hubcabs. Speaking of the Sport in my sig, here's the Grey Ghost in fake Sheriff livery. These are all magnet graphics. The only things missing are the dog dish wheels and the fake velcro-attached push bar.

Here it is with the foam and drain pipe velcro-strap-attached prop push bar I made, its working strobes are powered by a 12v mini-battery pack.

It's more important to have the satisfaction of the guys working with the cars than it is about how they look on screen as long as they look "movie cool". Sort of like how a**hole actors find it hard to get repeat jobs if the crew finds them hard to work with, in spite of their onscreen talent.

For years I've been telling my company's owner that he needs to change his American flag car magnets because they all have the blue field on the left side and real police car flags follow the military protocol, that the blue field has to always be advancing, so left on the left side of the car, right on the right side of the car. He said, "Nobody ever notices or complains." Sure enough, in December I'm on a commercial for Rossi pistols and director, ex-military, pitched a fit when the flag went the wrong way on the Expedition. Fortunately, I had my own going the right way, and I switched it.

BTW, here's that Rossi commercial, with my Expedition and that's me doing the stunt driving. Those "Sheriff" graphics are all edge-cut MAGNETS.

It's a pretty good commercial, designed to look like a trailer for an actual movie. Rossi's had lots of people ask them when's the movie coming out! The whole thing was shot in two days, the vast majority of the scenes shot on one western Utah ranch, going round in a circle at base camp, each scene getting a different angle of the ranch like different wedges of the same pie.

Hmm. If they filmed more [censored] out here, maybe I'd consider loaning it out. But, they really don't shoot much here and when they do, it's some dumbass Marvel movie or something where they need wreckable cars.

As far as the bodywork for sale, it's a thought, to be sure, but I really think I'd sooner do it right and present the car as being a truly clean (for this region) P7B. $300 in a fender and paint isn't really a huge deal and I think it'd reflect in resale value.
