Hey all, with the (not) wonderful heat going on this year, I’d like to know what your AC temps coming out of the vent is? I bought a meat mechanical thermometer weeks back and would share my readings.

Test 1:
Outside temp: 115
Humidity: 8%
Vent temp, with AC on normal: 51 degrees when idling, 47 degrees when at 75mph highway speeds.

Test 2:
Outside temp, 95
Humidity: 11%
Vent temp: AC on normal: 49 when idling.
Did not get a run in the highway.

Test 3:
Outside temp: 92
Humidity: 9%
Vent temp: AC on normal: 50 when idling.
39 when I was on the highway at 80mph.

My car is black on black, decent quality tint on everything except the windshield, and even with those temps coming out of the vent, it still seems pretty uncomfortable when idling. Few weeks ago the AC did get extremely warm and humid for about 15 seconds when just riding around town, and went back to normal. Hasn’t happened again, just wondering.

Had a full vac and recharge last year. My mechanic said I might need to replace the condenser at some point and the compressor clutch is kinda worn.

Thoughts?

Haven't had anything hotter than your Test 3, but my numbers are similar. Of course, they'd be better if I still had R12 in it, as you lose some efficiency in the conversion.

The thing that makes the biggest difference is air moving thru the condenser. Idling, you're relying on the fan, and even a good electric one won't move as much air as it needs to in really hot conditions.

When it's just brutal sweaty hot, nothing less than arctic feels cool enough. Setting your fan on high to move more air thru the evaporator will help, if you're not doing that already.

I hate you. Humidity here in New England rarely gets below 65% all summer. Right now it's 83%.

If you want the coldest air, you need to put the fan on high and MAX A/C. It makes a difference because you want the most air moving across the evaporator core for heat transfer.

I use the meat thermometer in the center register closest to the evaporator too, because my eyes like that it is twice the size of the little pencil gauge I bought at the auto parts place. And I leave it in year round.

We haven't had any 100s here yet this year, but lots of 80's and some 90's. Enough to give interior readings in the 130's after the car has set for a while, even in the shade.

I normally only use the second fan position for driving around and I get and stays right on 40°F pretty quick, less than 10 minutes running the A/C. When I switch to High fan speed, it will drop down to the 30's. It used to be about 33-34°, even last year. But this year I've only seen it down to about 37-38°F. It's been just over 10 years since I rehabbed the system, so I guess I'm about due.

My old car has both a mechanical and an electrical fan. I thought I was having a problem with the electrical one last year, but on closer inspection, it was just my imagination.

And I remember back to when I did my A/C work that I could only get it to fully charge when I hosed down the condenser to get that temperature down.

Ahhh. See, my knowledge on the “MAX AC” setting is something I’m not 100% on knowing. I swear I read somewhere that that setting makes the air warmer, slightly, and that you should only use fan speed on 3 for the most coldest amount of air possible. If it’s not like that, I’ll give max AC in speed 4 a try. It’s going to be 120 tomorrow, and 8% humidity here.

Max AC closes the outside-air door, so you're recirculating. The air inside gets colder, faster.

120 degrees? Six months of snow doesn't seem like such a PITA now.

I guess the 5 mile drive to and from work wasn't letting it get all the way cool. I went on about a 15 mile spin around town today with everything on MAX. 40°F came within the first mile and by about 10 miles, I was seeing 33°F again. Boy does that feel good after standing out in the sun doing some yard work. Ambient is about 87 with 70% humidity.

I stopped when I got back home and popped the hood to check on compressor cycling. On constantly as I expected, but after about 5 minutes idling while I put up my window shades, I was getting a nice coating of frost on the receiver/drier. Time to cut it off.

Did another test yesterday after work while going to grab some food.

Test 4:
Outside air temp: 115
Humidity: 6%
Idling: AC on MAX, on fan speed 3: vent temp was bubbling between 45-49 degrees.
While cruising around town at 40mph: it stayed between 35 and 40 degrees.
Side note: Was not in direct sunlight, sun was setting, but it was still hot as hell outside.

Oof, today was a bad one.

Test:

Outside temp: 119
Humidity: 6%
AC on MAX, fan speed 3: idling, 61 out of vent. While cruising: went from 47 to 52. Was in direct sunlight.

Wondering if I should consider insulating the roof and doors…

I think you should consider getting a large piece of that stick on vinyl like they make temporary door signs out of and use it during the hot season. Large enough to go over the whole rof.

Or what is that other stuff? Vinyl wrap?
Can't you put something like that on just for the season? Maybe white. I know they have chrome. I don't know if that would reflect the sun like a mirror or suck up the heat. Seems like any color would have to be better than black.

Considering those vent temps, I think you're in pretty damn good shape. 50 deg lower than ambient, are you serious? That's way better than both my Fords, I'm like 25 below ambient.

Trying to insulate the doors and roof wouldn't do much good since the glass isn't insulated. The really good ceramic window tint has 99% UV rejection, and is your best line of defense.

Not so much for insulation as for reflection. Black absorbs the full force of the suns rays, white still gets hot as hades, but does manage to kick some back. Kind of like walking down a newly paved road barefoot in the summer, or walking a few feet away on the concrete sidewalk.

And for the fan speed. Mine only goes to the low 30's when the fan is on MAX. 1, 2, and 3 all give about the same temp. I'm not real fond of having the wind in the face thing, so I point the vents away from me. You can feel the 6-7 degree difference.

I look at it like I'm putting gauges on and testing the system for charge. That is with everything maxxed out. You don't test on low settings. Fan on high, Temperature full cold, and MAX A/C. 1500 rpms. No sitting there idling.

I'm continually amazed that my a/c is doing so good after all this time. But, I think 8 to 10 years is near time for a freshening up for a r134-a system. If for no other reason than to renew all those o rings and seals that loose their ability to seal with time. That's where most of those springtime, "my a/c doesn't seem to be as cool as it was last year" posts come from.

I did get a warning earlier this year as I found some rust on the low pressure charge port. I had to clean it up some and buy a new cap for it just to be sure it was sealing. That's on the receiver dryer. Seems to still be doing its job.

There are some real cheap UV flashlights for sale. I verified the location of my leak with a $10 Walmart light. $10 rarely buys anything with air conditioning, essentially free.

BTW, there's a lot of misleading information on Internet forums. Trust but verify is a good rule.

Dehumidification is a large part of AC. Read about the Latent Heat of Evaporation and Sensible Heat.

Subcool and Superheat are two terms you should know.

I guess the temps out of the vents ain’t bad at all then lol. I think I’m going to look into UV film for the windshield. I didn’t know if using FatMat or alike on the roof would help or not. I mean, I might end up doing it for sound deadening purposes in the future.

On my 2011 LX ...

I have the 70% 3M crystalline tint installed all around including the windshield, expensive but I’m satisfied with its performance.

UV tint on the front windshield isn't exactly clear. At night some people have reported visibility issues while driving past headlights and other sources of lights. Not only that but the film is fairly expensive. Last I checked you're looking at 300-400$.

I say your AC system is working pretty good and generally speaking last the life of the car. What you can do is gently clean the condenser with a garden hose and you can do what I did and that is insulate any AC lines that you see are sweating.

Insulating the lines? That’s way new to me. Didn’t know that that was effective.

Today it was 109, 15% humidity.
I managed to get 49 while idling and 44 while driving around town lol.

I managed to retrofit an hvac system from a '72 El Dorado into my p71. The compressor is as large as the engine. Outside temp 110° sitting in a traffic jam I now enjoy snow coming out of the dash. At highway speed,by have to turn it off or I have a rolling freezer. I am of course, kidding but if I thought I could get away with it I would convert back to R12 freon. This new stuff isn't nearly as effective at heat transfer.

Switch to Fahrenheit.

No, that's not it. You did one in one direction and the other in the opposite direction. You have to convert both the same.

If you want 8°C to equal 46.4°F, then you have to use 85°C. That gives you an ambient of 185°F. Kind of toasty out there.

Sorry, my bad. Wrong planet. I meant to say Uranus.

Maybe he got the ambient off the local TV weather show. They probably were using °F, like just about all of the country. And maybe he got his thermometer while vacationing in Montreal. You know, up there in the U.S. of A.'s hat. Where they use that wacky Celsius scale. That way you can use both scales and your math works.

Nah, mine's about 37 C. laugh

You mean the U.S. of A. uses that wacky Fahrenheit scale. 'Cause the other 7+ billion people on this planet use the totally sensible 0 to 100 Celsius scale.

Got the AC shop to throw a full recharge at my newly aquired P71 with inoperative AC.
Humid 90F ambient yielded 50-55f at vents in idle in Norm AC, 45F on max ac.

Brand new AC compressor and condenser. 36oz charge, since I did not want to open new can for 2oz.
80F outside, 77% humidity.
Set at 60F and max - I got 26F at the left side driver vent at idle. The right side vent was 33F.
This was only for a short time during the AC recharge. I did not run it that cold for long.

The humidity is a little higher down here in the south too.
I just checked mine the other day and it was in the mid 40s but the humidity was so bad you could cut it with a knife. It has been a very hot/humid summer this year. 2011 Crown Vic

Well I decided to take a pressure washer to the radiator area last week, and lately it’s been about 115 degrees outside. Seems like on AC Max it’s holding at about 45 degrees coming out the vents. I’m pretty happy so far. There was a lot and I mean allot of dirt that I was able to wash out.

Seventy degrees temperature difference from ambient? Your system's working perfectly.

Oh yeah. I’m super happy with my temps coming out of the vents now. Pressure wash your condenser y’all! Today it made it to 109 and it was blowing at 41 degrees lol.
