GM gets pissy because Ford calls it's self-driving system "BlueCruise," and infringes upon GM's "Super Cruise" system.

Apparently, GM claims the word "cruise" is protected by trademark/copyright laws, because their self-driving subsidiary company is named "Cruise." Ford claims prior usage, and that everybody knows what "cruise control" refers to in automotive jargon.

Doing a Google search for "cruise" netted me a bunch of references to shipboard travel sites; even "Cruise.com" is a website vendor selling primarily shipboard travel opportunities...

Aside from getting newsprint ink, what does GM hope to gain from this stunt?

Nothing GM does makes any sense. Their whole corporate existence is due to the triumph of hope over experience.

Yeah...I am doubting this will end in Gm's favor, words in common usage don't hold up well to copyright claims.

Ford goes after people also who use some combination of names. ie:car forums, this one included, though this one got the cease and desist for having the blue oval incorporated into the logo.

Yeah, that's definitely a no-no. Using another logo to promote one's own.

But no one "owns" the word cruise. Maybe it's all a publicity stunt to promote their own cruise while attacking Ford's.

But "Cruise" is the name of the General Motors subsidiary which focuses on Self-Driving systems... This may be the real basis for GM's lawsuit.
