Hello everyone, this forum was a large part of the reason I felt so safe buying this thing so I figured I'd share some of the excitement.

This is my retired CHP car with 135k and 10k idles, seems to be running pretty strong.

The '97 Mark VIII LSC guy down the road has been blue ballin' me saying the shop is still waiting around to fix the thing and smog it so I said, "to heck with it," and took the train 6 hours down to SD and bought this off a bearded Fed. Spent more $$$, but I'm guessing future me will appreciate that I didn't buy a big beautiful black scratch magnet (among other things)...

Anyway here's the car, hope you like it and feel free to bounce some ideas around on what's next.
Cheers

Question: With these former Oreos, do they repaint the whole car before resale, or just the front & rear? Are the doors and roof still the original white, is there a tape mark, and what's the color match like?

This, of course, was merely the semi-delirious notion of a fever-patient, but I remember that it struck me at the time as being eminently practical and feasible.

When I bought a 2011 Oreo from the Ventura county sheriff they repainted the doors black before sale with a single stage paint that looked pretty good when I picked it up. They did this because it is illegal to drive a black and white as a civilian in California and in order to sell it to the general public they had to modify it. Agencies that don’t repaint their black and whites have to sell them in limited auctions to license dealers and auto salvers only.

Their paint looked pretty good when I initially got it but it started to Flake after one year. It was a hot mess when I sold it.

I don't know much about other ones, but this one seems to be all original white with various splotches of rattle can where they tore off paint when removing the decals. The paint match is not that great; there are weird chunky parts and flakes as well as very visibly bondo'd antenna holes on the roof. Planning on repainting it at some point (either white or some battleship color: light blue, tan, or cement).

Also I think there was a front end collision with this one as the header panel seems to be in much better condition than the rest of the car, and the hood latch is in a funky spot which is (I think) the reason I have a wiggly hood at freeway speeds..

Yours definitely had a "shield" on the doors as it came with no front door trim.

A new set of genuine Ford headlight housings can make the front of the car look brand new, at least it did on our '04.

Yeah I redact my earlier statement about it being "all original white", there is some black under some of the chips and boy are there a lot of them.. Thinking I may try out either Maaco or some local buddies of mine and get that resolved someday. For now just working out any little functional things. The wiggly hood at high speed, squeaky front left on slow bumpy turns, and clicky broken driver's seat base are my main gripes so I'd say I did alright.

Your driver seat is probably clicky because of broken front seat bolts. These almost always rust out and will snap if you try to unbolt them nine times out of 10, it is not worth tapping the old ones out just push the seat adjustment all the way to the back, get some big strong self tapping bolts, drill pilot holes through the seat frame and the floor pan and torque those self tappers down.

Maaco will be a grand if you do a lot of the prep work yourself and select a single color single stage paint. Until you get to the stage where you wanna pop for that (and you may never want to based on the age and mileage of the car) just keep rattle canning and patching of areas that flake off. you’ll get good at it and you’ll even get to where you can kind of match the paint using a combination of white colors cover well and blend them with performance white.

This had been done to my CVPI by the department that owned it and I thought they were just being lazy. Glad to know this is somewhat a common practice.

I first saw it done that way by a LE Agency on a car I bought, then with other cars I started to try to take them out and damned if they wouldn't snap more than half the time. I had to do two Town Cars fast one day, no time to waste and I snapped off 3 out of 4 with little effort. Felt like Hercules.

Next I tried using a big easy out to extract the original bolts, no go, then tried drilling them out, which was VERY long and difficult process, not worth it. Then the next one I took to my welder to have him drill it out with his better tools and he said "No way!" He just zipped in some pilot holes in the soft frame and pan steel and zipped in some self-tappers, one to two per leg, in single-digit minutes. So that's what I did for the next set.

Then I started hitting them liberally with PBlaster the night before, waiting, then giving them the torch from underneath. I haven't broken another since.
