Hello All,

My nephew has had his 11 CV for a couple years now and it's time for inspection. However we cannot get the P0128 code to go away and I've extensively researched it on this forum.

I've replaced the CHT and verified to data from the IAT/MAF is good as well as changed out the thermostat a few weeks ago.

Any other suggestions to things I should look at? I am going to check the CHT wiring by checking it cold and seeing if i get weird temp readings.

The odd thing is when i'm looking at the PIDs I see a reading for the Intake Temp, the CHT Temp and one for Coolant temp. If the CHT has replaced the coolant temp sensor on the newer vics, then where is it obtaining this reading from? It seems to rise and fall independent of the CHT reading.

I'm really trying to help him out because in RI if you miss an inspection for too long they suspend your registration and his was up at the end of December. Anything helps.

Thank You,
Michael

I would start off by doing some basic trouble shooting, like tracing the wiring on the CHT back as far as you can and checking for breaks/torn insulation/etc. If you can trace it all the way back and do a continuity/resistance test, even better.

Are any of the engine ground straps damaged/rotted away? Should be an easy/quick check.

I believe you are correct and that the ECT (coolant temp) sensor doesn't exist on 2006 or 2008+ cars, they rely on the CHT for these readings.

What brand and part number thermostat was used? Are the fans stuck on always?

Thanks for your reply!

It's currently 21 degrees out and dark so i wasn't able to trace the wiring to far, but I did check from the CHT connector to the ABS style round plug it connects to and it looks pretty good.

I'm going to try to post the scanner readings below, but i'm not sure what hosting works on here.

One picture is the cold readings of the CHT, IAT and the PID called coolant temp sensor. The other is after I unplugged the connector from the round side.

The CHT i used on the car was an AutoZone Duralast SU2188, as i needed something quick that was in stock. I'm pretty sure the thermostat was a Duralast 3778 (180) and the fans operate normally and are not stuck on. I was thinking of changing the thermostat to a FailSafe 7265-195 (195) but not sure if that 15 degrees matters in this case.

In case you cannot see the images, the CHT reading was 145 degrees while the IAT was 57 and the Coolant Temp was 68. At the time the reading was taken the car had been parked for 2 hours in approx 23 degree weather.

The other picture is what it changed to after i had unplugged the CHT from the round connector, it read -40.

I can do a resistance from the round connector to at least rule out the sensor and first pigtail, do you know what the value should be? Is there another connector after that or does it run right to the PCM from there?

Let me know what your thoughts are.

Thanks!
Michael

180 degree stat is too cold and might not satisfy the P0128 criteria.

Install a 195 stat.

Also, it should be clarified that if you expect the P0128 to clear on its own, it takes a certain number of successful cold to hot drives over time. May take a while. You'll want to clear it manually.

Ok, I will install the 195 stat in the meantime and clear the engine code manually. Every time i clear it, it only takes one back and fourth trip with the car for the code to set again. Do you have any thoughts on the hot reading of the CHT when the car is sitting cold?

Thanks,
Michael

I just swapped one out a couple weeks ago for the same issue.

I would double check the thermostat, make sure you got the right operating temp MOST are 165/180 and it takes 195.

Some of the chitty Chinese pieces fail right out of the box.

Lastly, I have found the failsafe units to fail early and often, but in their defense, they fail in the open position as they are designed to do and depending on your climate they can run very cool.

Sorry this was from last night, but still applicable.

I agree with the above posters, 180F is too low. I also personally do not trust Duralast parts when it comes to sensors and such, I've just seen to many failures/issues.

I normally run Motorcraft or Motorad thermostats. I believe OEM is 190, but 195 is perfectly acceptable also.

OK, I will go for the motorcraft thermostat 195, just ordered it.
For the motorcraft CHT, is F65Z-6G004-AB (I ordered this one) the correct part number for the 2011 Vic LX or is 8L3Z-6G004-A? There doesn't seem to be a difference and seem interchangeable.

Anyone know the part number for the CHT wiring pigtail? Might be a good idea to do that as well while i'm in there.

Thank You,
Michael

Both of those CHT sensors seem to be interchangeable according to my searches.

For the pigtail, 3U2Z14S411ARA seems to be the part number, but I honestly would leave that alone as long as it looks to be in good condition.

Hello All,

I replaced the CHT & Thermostat (195) with a motorcraft. Aside from the CHT breaking off in the head and having to extract it, everything went well. However when replacing the thermostat I noticed the brand new thermostat i got from autozone was stuck open, so i'm not sure what the culprit actually was, but the method of thermostat and CHT replacement seems to be the way to go for this code.

It's been 3-4 days and no code yet.

Thank You all for your Help!

Glad you got it fixed! My money is on the thermostat or it being a combination of things.

Thanks for sharing your solution.

On a side note, in So Cal where the weather is frequently hot, plastic protective tubing for the CHT turns into dust and leaves exposed wire in contact with the block. I went through my entire engine harness and re-tubed and re-taped my wiring to make sure the sensor wires are not heat soaking. Car ran cleaner afterwards. My guess is heat soak caused exposed wires to send wrong sensor value to the PCM. PCM might have interpreted hot running condition and retarded ignition.

Thank you, I'll keep that in mind. There are quite a few tubes that have disintegrated including that one, but i did ensure the wiring was in tact. After the temp comes up in Rhode Island, if my nephew plans on keeping it (which i hope he will) I'll teach him that and some other preventative measure that are common on these cars.
