I have heard that a rebuilt mustang gt posi can be put on a crown victoria. Is this true and how simple is it? Can it be put in directly or are more parts needed? Do these usually last very long, and will it damage the car in the long run? I want to use it to race others and go to the drag strip.
(I have a 98 crown victoria police interceptor, if that has anything to do with it.)

Do a search about trac-loc and rear-ends.

Yes you can use it You will need a diff install kit which summit carries or even the shop that does it for you may have. I have a rebuilt posi from a f-150 which also has a stronger (s) spring in it as well as an extra set of clutches as well as I also went to 3.55 gears for a bit more acceleration from my 3.08's. Do take a search though as many people have upgraded their diffs from open their to a rebulit mustang, explorer crown vic f-150 28 spline 8.8" posi diff. If you are considering changing rear end gears do it at the same time. There are several different kind of diffs though for all season and daily driving use as well as "racing" a ford lsd is great. Take a look as here and if you do a seach on the web the different types of differentail units are discussed as far as their pros and cons for how they are being used.

Yes, the "Mustang" posi will work on your Crown Vic. Read this link from Charlie (Metroplex), and if you think you can do it yourself, go for it.

ALL Ford passenger cars use the same traction lock carrier. 28 spline axles and a 3/4" pinion shaft.
they are fairly simple to rebuild. Rebuild kit is avaiable from Ford for around $40, part # F5AZ-4947-BA. I also recommend the Ford synthetic 75w-140 gear lube, its great stuff.
You will need to shim the carrier to obtain the correct backlash when the carrier is installed, this requires a dial indicator. This can be challenging if you have never done it before.

Actually some stangs (not gt's), cobras use a 31 spline as well as some hd trucks/vans/suv's. As well as there are 9" rear ends as well espicalyl on e-bay. While those aren't all normally daily driver passenger cars they can be and you could accidently get a 31 if you didn't bother to notice the difference.

yes you have to be careful. some are 31 spline, but as you look you will find most to be 28 spline, which is most common, and what the crown vic has.

The lsd is the way to go as you can get them for a good price as quite a few fords off and on road have and are always upgrading and you can get a new or new-rebuilt lsd for alot less than new sometimes even with gears like 3.55's or 3.73's.

No, they don't
The 2003 Cobra *might* use a 31 spline carrier, but thats it, everything else is 28 spline.

Only the 8.8 diff in the F/E-150 uses 31 spline axles with a 7/8" pinion shaft.

Riigghtt, you gonna believe everything you read on E-bay?

Tell me something, since all '94 up Mustangs have 4 wheel ABS, why does this one have an ABS exciter ring mounted on the carrier?
I will tell you why, because that 31 spline carrier is from a TRUCK !
Just because somebody posts about Cobra parts, does not mean they are any different than regular production parts.

Its like all those "other" people that believe Police cars have "cop car" engines.

They are from from an explorer and can be used on stanges with or upgraded to 31 spline axles. There are also other 31 splines from older trucks and if you go old enough several cars but i didn't include those in my post.
The cop parts is kind of funny that people make fun off.
While they laugh becuse there isn't a "cop engine".
The pi's do have a ecc tuned differently, usually a different axle ratio and the shorter ammx or aluminum drive shaft and tailshaft extension as well as different springs and shocks and rear sway bar and isn't there extra frame bracing in certain areas as well?

Yes, I know the carrier is from an Explorer.
Thats my point... Passenger cars get 28 spline, trucks get 31 spline, end of story.

You can install a 31 spline carrier from a truck, into a car, but obviously it requires you install 31 spline axles.
This is an inexpensive upgrade for Mustang owners, Fox body cars especially, that want to go to 31 spline axles.
