Hello.
My 4.6 engine gets now SHELL Helix Ultra 5W40 synthetic oil.
Would AMSOIL 5W40 European Engine oil be a better choice??
Greetings Bernhard.

Putting any 40 weight oil in the 4.6 is a bad decision.

The oil passages in the head are small enough that thick oil doesn't flow to the valve train as it should.

That is why the specified oil is 5W30 or 5W20.

However, if you intend to replace the heads and valve trains in the near future, I suppose it is useless information.

JohnG told me a while back, that my Royal Purple 10-40 was no problem. The "issue" with the 4.6 is getting the oil to the OHC upon a cold, first-start. OK. A synthetic "10" flows as quick or quicker at that time, than a conventional "5" weight.

Wouldn't mind hearing comments, on the "40" aspect of the question. Personally, it has helped with the oil consumption issue a bit. I also find it comforting, sitting at idle over Georgia asphalt, in 96-degree temps.

Also, it seems that the 0-40 synthetic formula, is becoming popular overseas. I might try Mobil 1's for the Dec/Jan./Feb. months.

Lastly, I still feel the 5-20, is all about rules and MPG, rather than engine life, and durability. A TRUE synthetic like my R/P or Amsoil, I don't have a real concern with. But a dodgey "blend" of 5-20, with something group III, I don't like. I see a lot of PD's giving the 5-20's the finger, and using a 5-30 like they have since 1992.

The main reason oil consumption goes down with 40 weight oil is because you get less up there to leak through the valve seals.

If you have oil consumption, change the valve seals and use the correct oil so it doesn't wear out the valve train.

Yeah dana... But isn't "getting it up there" at start-up the main issue? Once she's pumping, is there really a problem with a 40-weight? MPG I can see...but ability to circulate, especially being synthetic, I'm not as worried with. But hey---I just might use the R/P 5-30 year round now, just cause ya have made me paranoid!

Well my car is maintened by Hessing.
Hessing is the one who delivers this car. Together with Lincoln.
I asked them if they could change from 5W40 to 5W30.
They said that i gonna get oil consumption and that 5W40 doesn't matter for the engine.
But you guys are right it is thicker.
So can i change to 5W30? Are should i try AMSoil 5W40?

classe, what does the owner's manual specify for your car? If it was originally intended for export to Europe, then 5W-40 may be acceptable. If it was originally an American-spec'd car, then IMHO you should be using 5W-30.

Netherlands eh? you won't find any xW-20 for use overseas - I'm not sure about your country though.

Using a 5W-40 or 10W-40 or xW-50 synthetic will not kill your engine. The same engine (made in the US) that is used in Australian cars, Saudi Arabian cars, Singapore cars, etc... you get the idea... all choose between synthetic xW-40 or xW-50 or dino 20W-50.

Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 is a true synthetic and is VERY good. Keep using it!

it doesn't matter if it's "American Spec'd" or "European Spec'd" because American Spec'd motors are just regulated harder under EPA/CAFE BS... meaning they want to squeeze every bit of gas mileage by using a pi$$ thin xW-20 oil. The same engine, made by the same Americans, that gets sent overseas sees 20W-50 dino or synthetic xW-40/xW-50.

Toyota OHC motors in Singapore see dino 20W-50 or xW-40/xW-50 synthetic. They have tighter tolerances/passages than American SOHC/DOHC V8s.

In regards to the cold start oil flow issue... that's why they have synthetic 5W-40/50 engine oils overseas.

I've asked some of the Aussie Ford owners what they use and no one uses xW-20 in their brand spanking new Fords.

We don't have Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 here in the US, so keep using it... It's very good engine oil.

This is one time where I happen to agree with Metroplex. The Helix Ultra 5W40 is a good product and fine for your car.

Can you even get Amsoil in the Netherlands? Amsoil is not distributed in Euroope (TMK). I have had people in Great Britain inquire about getting it there and while I can send it there, the shipping costs were absolutely cost prohibitive.

Don: I was wondering about Amsoil distribution overseas... I heard that in Australia, they don't have a lot of Amsoil dealers except for a handful.

There are plenty of excellent "Euro Spec" fully synthetic (in fact I think most of their "full synthetic" oils are really fully synthetic Group IV oils) engine oils available in Europe.
Castrol 0W-30 (Made in Germany - it should say it on the back label) is something you might find readily available. That is a Group IV engine oil.

xW-30 oils are starting to find their way onto shelves overseas... but xW-20 oils have not made an appearance yet.

Well for import the car has almost no changes.
Not on the engine but i think, and one of you guys said it already, 5W30 is not for sale in the Netherlands.

Hessing is alsoo importer of Rolls-Royce Bentley and Maserati and all of them gets Shell Helix Ultra 5W40.

I have the same owners manual as you people.
Would Shell Helix Ultra be better or equal as Amsoil?

Greetings Bernhard.
