Is 14-15volts a good range for a new battery?

Are you getting 14-15V DC from a new battery that has not been charged for at least 3 hours at around 80F??

That's a lot of voltage.

Here's the break-down:

A battery at 100% will measure 12.65V DC at 80F without being charged for a few hours (just sitting there holding the charge). It's not uncommong to see 12.25V to 12.85V DC from a battery that has been sitting for a few hours w/o being charged.

A battery connected to a vehicle's charging system that is currently running will read anywhere from 13.2V DC up to about 14.4V DC

The alternator's regulator is also temperature compensated so when you first start up the car (assuming it's cold compared to 80F-120F) you will see about 14V DC+. Nothing more than 15V DC!! Anything that high means your alternator is overcharging (diodes are shot?)

As you warm up the vehicle and drive it around, the voltage will drop (assuming you're not adding extra loads by turning on accessories) to around 13.2V DC to 13.8V DC. That's the nominal voltage for a 12V system.

Anything under 12.65VDC with the engine running means your alternator isn't charging properly (needs new brushes? shaft needs to be turned on a lathe?)

Well that is what the Autometer volt gauge is displaying, I've had the car for a couple of months so its a new battery to me.

You are asking about the car's system voltage, not the battery voltage as measured with a DVM at rest.

Anything much over 14.2Vdc is too high (overcharging) with the engine running.
