Can't fill up gas tank

I've been noticing now that I can either overfill my tank (the gas nozzle doesn't stop by itself) or it won't fill it up. I've had gas bubble up and drip onto the ground! I always set it at the slowest feed speed.
I'm wondering if this is related to my hard to start condition (during a hot start)...

Metro what year is your car?? 98+
Here is the steps to follow: 1)Go under car, remove the 2 rear nuts holding the evap can onto the trunk pan.
2) Find valve hose connection on the pass. side, and electrical conn. on the drivers side. The unit will by attached to the evap box.
3)Remove the line, and electrical connection, pull the valve from the canister, and blow it out with compressed air.
4) Clean hose with compressed air, and replace.
Ill betyou have the farting sound coming from your gas cap as well.
Solved all these problems at the local PD.

Could very well be the cannister. I have had that problem on numerous occasions on several cars. Actually now that I think about it-I have had that problem ever since I can remember. I thought the pump may have a problem or air was trapped in the system and preventing the nozzle from working properly. Any specific conditions causing this -Anybody?

Good advice Warren. I had the dealer fix my CEL condition by replacing the solenoid in the cannister. I did not however have a problem filling the tank. Never on my Vic.Did on my Geo,my 79 Impala,my 84 Vic,my 89 Geo, and my old 72 Polara but the 2000 Vic is perfect and ran almost perfect even with a bad valve in the cannister so go figure. I did however, clean out the HOSE TO NOwhere as discussed at some length awhile back. It was plugged by mud. Don't know why the dealer didn't clean out that hose when they cleaned the other one?

The valve in the canister on the 98+ are suseptable to getting loaded with dirt and gravel...yes gravel. I pulled out a rock from the hose, right by the valve. that was the size of a dime in diameter.
The method I wrote above is 99% effective. My 99 had a problem back when it was still in service. Ive had it a year, and have NEVER been able to fill it up quickly, or fill it up without spill, until Ive done this service. Now I can fill it full, and fast.
The time to do this is about 10-15 minutes.

It's a 2000 Vic, and I don't hear any farting noise.
Did you have any problems with hot-starts?
I suspect its just a crappy gas station because I had the overfill condition on the T-bird as well.
I'll check out the canister when I get a chance just as a precaution, thank you very much!
