Did a tune up, there was a listing for two different 4.6 plugs for most brands. Example, Bosch #4205, .044 gap is Police listing and Bosch #4459, .054 gap regular plug. Both are platinum plugs.

The plugs that came in my used 110k miles P71 were Autolite AP764 a non police listing. The plugs I put in were the Bosch #4205 police listing.

---What is the difference? Can you use either one for regular driving in a P71?

The bottom length (top of thread to the tip) looked the same, BUT the police listing plug had more threads on it.

The article is good, everything you need to know. I've read it before, It's like asking what time it is and getting information of how to build a watch.

Thanks Bomber, I guess I put in the correct plugs!

I'm running 764s in a P71, and have had no problems.

It would be good if the articles for spark plugs included a color range chart. Reading the color of the plug will tell you how your engine is running. You would know if you have fuel problems, emmisions problems, cold verses hot heat range problems. For these OBD2 Fuel Injected vehicles the color of the plugs has changed meaning since the old carb days.

I have had excellent service, out of the NGK TR55's. I recently read a "how-to" book, on maxing out the 4.6 motor. The builder uses these NGK's in all his race cars, with highly modded 4.6's. Strange...but they work great.

Its out of the back of one of the manuals for my car, I hope it helps. When I find the cd for my scanner I'll scan it and you will be able to see it alot better.

There is no police engine or police spark plugs.
That is all.

Ok, but why would a manufacurer say there is , or have a different gap?

During my last tune-up, I installed the factory plugs that were listed in my service cd. My only deviation was that I went with double platinum instead of singles. The Motorcrafts I pulled out at 108K were in surprisingly good condition. I could've cleaned, re-gapped, reinstalled and ran all eight of them for another twenty or thirty k. If nothing else, our engines run clean.

if you gapped your plugs at .044 that is WRONG>. thats a fact.. without a car with a blower, NOS or a substantial build up .. the gap is .054 period....

as for wasting your money on BOSCH plugs.. its totally a waste.. completely...

now if you have a blower car denso iridums and some the of the NGK plugs are pretty cool...

but on these cars.. unless heavily modified good old cheap motorcrafts will run and run and run and run.. but dont listen to people who driven these cars a long time.. and heaven forbid you listen to John the Admin who works on hundreds of these cars every year...what would he know

Expressautoparts.com had 4.6 TWO listings for '99 spark plugs, POLICE and REGULAR. (Police was refering to Fleet natural gas engine!)
.044 gap is for 4.6 (9) (I thought 9 was P71)
.054 gap is for 4.6 (W)

I put in the WRONG plugs and gap!

My '99 Grand Marquis was listed as "W" engine
I ASSumed my P71 was different and was the "9" listing (9 is for Natural gas engine)...Oh S**t
