Hi,

My car has gotten to be a hard start when I first try after it has set over night or all day. It is very cold here, maybe that has something to do with it, I dont know.

But once it is warmed up it runs ok, EXCEPT if I step on the gas hard. Like on take off or to pick up quick speed. It will stall for a moment then kick in and go. The engine check light has been winking at me also.

What could be causing this? Maybe in bad need of a tune up? But that wouldnt make the check engine light come on would it? I just changed the water pump out, but I didnt do anything that would make the car stall when stepping on the gas, I dont think.

90 Crown Vic with a 5.0 liter.

Any help is appreciated, Thanks

Oh yeah, January 2004, new fuel filter. August 2004, new fuel pump and another new fuel filter. July 2004, new valve cover gaskets and manifold gasket. October 2004, new alternator. December 2004 new water pump.

Also car seems to idle fine.

Guess its really more of a short hesitation when you step on the gas hard than a stall out. Because the car doesnt completely die. Now in the mornings after you warm the car up and you first take off down the street it will sometimes die once on you. But when you start it back up and take off it goes fine. But like I said, now it hesitates when you step on the gas.

Im guessing probably a tune up is needed, and the IAC probably needs changed or cleaned. But would these make the check engine light come on? My other thought was maybe the Catalytic converter?

I have put some Heat in it last night and some fuel injector cleaner to see if that helps the problem.

Idle Air Control valve will not affect your acceleration, only your idle (hence its name). But I wouldn't discourage anyone from giving their IAC a good ol' douche. I know it certainly helped with the idle smoothness on my 182k mile beast.

I'd check your throttle position sensor first and see what voltage it's operating at during WOT, using a multimeter. (Refer to a Haynes or Chilton manual for specifics.) They run in the ballpark of $35 to $45.

Check every single vacuum connection and hose, and make sure nothing's rotted out, split, disconnected, and/or otherwise not in 100% tippy-top shape, particularly anything connected to your intake manifold or throttle body. Vacuum leaks cause all sorts of fun and interesting symptoms and are often a real treat to chase down.

If you've got a timing light, check to see where your timing sits at, as it may somehow have slipped a tad back, though I doubt it.

Finally, check the local prices on a six-pack of beer. You might be under the hood awhile with this, and even if you aren't, it's always good to have a cold one at hand for the holiday, so you'd best be prepared.

give it a tune-up and clean the throttle plate with spray TB cleaner

it could be a failed throttle position sensor

Seems to be running ok right now since I have added the Heat to the gas tank. Maybe it was just water in the fuel. I will see, we are going on a 2 hour trip in the morning.

Thanks

Well we took that 2 hour one way trip today. 4 hours there and back and the car ran fine. So I guess the problem was just water in the fuel freezing due to the cold weather we are having here. I put Heat and Fuel Injector cleaner in the last tank of gas Thursday and all seems well right now.

Thanks for all the input and help.
