Hey, P71, who sells that engine, and does that include carbs and scoop?

It (and many, many others) are sold by Al Lombardo Enterprises, out of New Milford, CT. The engine is complete, including carb base, but you need to furnish carbs of your choice.

Here is a link to their site..

I believe that a company named Total Performance sells parts for a 460 swap. I read this a couple years ago in a Hot Rod magazine in an engine swap article. The last time I checked they did not have a web site. I think this is correct, at my age two year old info is iffy! Worth checking out. Good Luck! Looking forward to some pics of the results.

Kaufmann Products (link shown below) sells big block swap kits for a number of cars including the 83+ LTD's, Marquis, etc., etc......

I believe D&D Automotive also has the swap kits.

Here is a 10 second Fairmont that has had a 460 transplant... Nice car..

Concerning total performance: Yeah, I talked to John, And maybe to the surprise of a few of you, he does not know where the magazines got the idea that T.Per. has a kit, because If I remember correctly, he said that they never offered one, but had a couple of part numbers for certain brackets one might use. CarCraft magazine ran an tech question concerning a 460 swap in september 2002, and I called him back to see if they were offering one, and was surprised to hear it. Who knows, I have already done the homework and 300 bucks in phone calls on who might have info, and you guys know as much or more than any of them do. So until someone does one and can give detailed info and/or pictures, we are still in the dark on how it will work, if it will even be feasible to do in an economic sense. I am still looking for a car, although being given an '83 mustang notchback in good shape yesterday is not speeding my locating one. And if I do get one, it is going to be the right car this time, and not the first thing I run across. But the 460 engine and AOD tranny are now sitting in the floor on a stand waiting for parts, so half the locating battle is done. And I may expand my search to include a 2-door CV, if I cannot find the right wagon.

THE John, as in John Vermeersch? I spoke to him once or twice when I was a lowly peon at the Mustnag parts store in Altoona about 15 years ago...man, he's gotta be OLD now!

Well, I'm just speculating as to the how, but the first thing I think of is the 351M/400M. Essentially small block Clevelands that had big block transmission bolt patterns. So what would work on a 351C wouldn't fit to a 351M, but what would fit to a 429/460 would. And since the FMX was fitted to both real smallblocks, as well as the 351M/400M engines, there are bellhousings for both big and small blocks for the FMX. Now, will an FMX bellhousing interchange with an AOD? If so, it would be a simple matter to the the AOD to bolt up to the 460. The question is, can the AOD handle the 460's power without spitting itself onto the pavement in tiny little pieces?

Okay, here is how an AOD is built for a 460:
First, you need an AOD, preferably from an '89-up 351 truck or cop car(explain later).
Next, disassemble on a really big bench.
Then, see if you have a 6-disc direct clutch basket in it, if you do, hooray!, if not, it is around $80 to buy one.
Next, you will need to get new bushings pressed in everywhere.
After that, you will need to buy the following items:
Performance Automatic, Art Carr ,Lentech, and someone else sells a one-piece input shaft and torque convertor kit, it is needed; you will need to buy a intermediate mechanical diode kit and AODE reverse drum, a 2-inch wide OD band, a intermediate pressure plate for a 4R70W, 4 Red Eagle intermediate friction discs, 4 kolene steel discs, a set of red eagle frictions and kolene steels for the intermediate and reverse clutches, an 8-disc direct clutch Red Eagle powerpack kit( you can only get 8 discs into the 6 disc direct clutch basket, that is why the big basket is needed, if you have the 5 disc unit, you can only get 7 frictions in), an A+ overdrive servo, a seal kit, a rebuilt front pump, preferably a Lentech valvebody, the modified one that enables both the reverse and direct clutch in 3rd, with that VB, the AOD is stronger than a turdblow 400.
Now, how to mount it: the 460 and 351m/400 share the same bellhousing pattern. the AOD bellhousing is not removeable, like the FMX. So, what you do is get an 460/351m/400 Ultrabell bell housing that mounts to the front pump bolts on the AOD, of course, after you cut off the old bell housing( how ever way you do it does not matter, just as long as the ultrabell has clearance). Of course, you also need the lokar cable, and well, that is all I can think of.......revisions will be coming, as I remember what I forgot......
