I've constructed an article on upgrading the stereo system in our cars:

I looked at your write up (the link) and it was very very good and comprehensive. Can you advise on how to set/reset the basic volume level on our radios? My radio's volume is preset from factory to a pre-determined level. Even if I have the radio much higher than that preset, once I turn the radio off and turn it back on, it goes to the preset. The only time that preset volume changes is if the volume was lower than the preset at time of radio off, then the radio will go to that lower setting when I turn the radio back on.

I would like to have the ability of changing that preset volume at will, if possible and provide for in the radio.

Although I have a P73, my radio may be a premium version (I, of course, may be wrong) as it is the version/model that includes cd and tape players.

Thanks,

Carlos

Not trying to hi-jak your thread or anything, but, I installed the Premium Sound System from a 1997 Ford Explorer in my 2000 P71.
The Explorer radio is not "Plug n Play" with the Crown Vic. I had to do some modifications to make it work.
If your bored or purchased the wrong radio on Ebay take a look.

Man, that totally is good info for me. I have been trolling for a Mach MP3 unit for a little while to replace my AM/FM cassette. One little problem is the @#$%#@ radio is stuck in there. I have taken several wacks at pulling it out with the Ford tools and no dice.

I am ready to take a sawzall to it

I even practiced with my old 93 DIN radio and can't figure out why I can't feel the tool clicking into the clips??

Wiggle wiggle is all I have to say. I was able to get mine out without forcing the two metal hanger things in too hard.

I had the stock AM/FM radio in my vic.
Then upgraded to the cassette player, which looks the same on the face but has the cassette opening.
Then I upgraded to the CD player which also looks the same as the other one but has the CD slot insted of the cassette( but had an adapter and had two wiring harness's for the amp the was mounted in the trunk). And finnally I upgraded to another CD player that looks the same as the other CD player, but did not require the adapter or the amp & harness. It does have some differences which i think makes it be able to hook a CD changer to. Like the radio preset buttons 1 & 2 have "<<" and ">>" on it. and there is a small button above the "CLK" button(clock) that when pressed the display say's "NO DJ". Anyone have one of these, and have any info on Part NO's for adding a changer(if that's what the extra functions controll?

2vmodular- I've never seen the radio you have posted above before.

well i got a mp3 deck coming in the mail. So I will see how that fits in, and since it has a slide down face I am going to have to put it in the top section of the radio bay. But thanks 2vmodular.

Someone had a lot of time on their hands...

I just went aftermarket and never looked back. The Aiwa CDC-MP3 that everyone b*tches about skipping and crap was passed on to me (for $130 at the time) from Who's Yo Daddy 4 years ago and has been running fine. shrug.

I saw some eBay auctions for the Mach 1 MP3 player ending at nearly $400.
That's ridiculous for a factory player that doesn't even have LCD or OLED displays.

Update,

The Stock radio FINALLY came out. Turned out the spring clips were bent WAYY out so far that when you inserted the tool, it was not touching anything.

I removed the dash face and the radio came out with it and I could see and touch the spring clips. I just pried the clips back in with a screwdriver from the back side. That radio was NEVER going to come out the standard method. The clips are so bent, one side will still not push in without prying as it is twisted.
