Hello all,

I did a search and nothing came up. I have an idea and could you give some pointers or words of wisdom. I was thinking that I could swap out the non-pi heads with a donor set from 99 & up Mustang GT or 2001 & up Crown/GranMa. Along with a new intake for 99 & up Mustang GT or 2001 & Crown/GranMa. What do you think? Can it be done relatively reasonable?

I just responded to your PM, but I will post some cliff notes here.

PI heads on a non-PI block = higher compression ratio.

A search didn't come up with anything on PI head swap? A lot of work to do the entire head. I went the PI cams and PI intake only route (4.6 car, but a Cougar). I have more room (97 Cougar) and can do more in car than with my 2000 Grand Marquis. I am waiting to have some time off from work to do the cams, I bought the cams off eBay, the tool to use so that I don't have to take off the front cover, a MAF and airbox (from Mustang GT, an upgrade like the Marauder MAF/Airbox combo for the panther), and the PI intake. I HAD to do the intake because the recall all composite one that was on there burst on my (driving semi agressively against my wife in my 2000 Grand Marquis).

Some have chronicalled the head swap, most take the engine out, some have done it in car. I want to be able to do it in a weekend DAY, maybe both, or day off from work. I have to work outside, and no help or good tools or large tools (engine hoist) that help me make the decision for me.

I am after 40 to 50 hp and a very nice driving car for daily city use, probably can get closer to 60 in my quest. I might even do it all with my Grand Marquis also, but since it is a baby carrier/family mover and vacation mobile now, I probably won't.

How can you tell a pi head compared to a non pi head?

Yea, having done a "headswap", that is about the dumbest thing you can do for cost and time efficiency.

You get almost EXACLTY the same gains from just the PI intake and cams for 1/2 the time and cost.

Kind of new to these fords, so please bare w/me, but what you are saying is instead of going the time and expense of buying PI heads and installing them I, having a '99 PI ,would be better off w/PI intake and just putting PI cams in the NPI heads and would still pick up some extra HP and some torque? Thanks in advance. Choptop

Thank you, one would normally think that the PI heads, being somewhat of a performance piece would net you a lot more than stock heads w/new cams, but I am finding that these endines are a little different than the once I am used to in my classic vehicles.

If I end up getting a cherry low-mile '99 next time around instead of an '01, I am thinking about one of ADTR's header-exhaust combos with Aerochambers and mandrel-bent tail pipes instead of the PI headswap. I just have never felt good about opening up a good engine to make it 'better'.

PI heads have square intake ports (versus NPI oval), heart shaped combustion chambers (versus NPI round), and PI have "PI" and "V8". A google search of "ford 4.6 PI head marking" resulted in second link having this picture:

That's fine. My comment was directed towards the initial poster.
