My 1969 Fairlane Cobra Sportsroof, 428CJ & 4-speed(both std) and optional 3.50 RAR with Traction-Lock in the 31 spline 9"... Other options include Ram Air, PDB, bucket seats, console, AM/FM Stereo(was a big deal in the '70s)... Has manual steering but P/S conversion is in the works(gotta finish the Comet I bought earlier this year, it's the guinea pig for testing my P/S rebuilding skills)...

I've owned it since 1973 & now has 107K mi...

BTW the wheels & race mirrors were also options but not original, I added those & the AM/FM shortly after I bought it...

Pict with 42 year old daughter approx three weeks after purchase(scan from a faded pict, it's always been Candy Apple Red)...

That's a almost new '71 or '72 Country Squire Sta Wgn, headed west on I-64 in the back ground...
(No the image isn't flipped, I-64 actually heads due east at the section pict was taken)

At car show with daughter & 7 year old granddaughter this past Aug...

That's awesome! Good to see a car stay within the family for so long. Gives it a great history and background.

If you're referring to the mid-size Fairlane 500; I believe you mean the '62 though '64 models.

The '61 Fairlane (& Fairlane 500) was still a full-size (then standard-size) car.

Yeah the auto makers used to come out with a new high end model then slowly demote it down the line as years went by... In '55 & '56 Fairlane were the top dog models(Crown Victoria was the real top dog but didn't sell in big numbers)... In '57, Fairlane 500 was top of the heap and by '59 the Galaxie had appeared tacked on to the Fairlane 500... Retractable hardtops for the '57-'59 period were the Skyliners while the Sunliner was used on the soft tops(Sunliner was used on converts for many years, not sure when it began or ended, I'm not a rag top man) ... In '60 & '61 the Galaxie 500 was top dog with Fairlane & Fairlane 500 demoted to schoolmarm status replacing the base Custom & Custom 500 models... 1960 & 1961 were also the years for Starliner that was basically a Fastback Galaxie 500...

Fairlane moved to a totally new model for '62, top full size model was now the Galaxie 500XL with bucket seats std... Custom was back, it and Galaxie were the economy models, while Galaxie 500 was the full trim model... This continued through '64 and in '65 the LTD appeared as top luxury model, with other models continuing in their previous rolls... It is worth mentioning the Fast Back models were back in mid year '63(as '63 ) & '64 but were integrated into the Galaxie 500 & 500XL models... I'll stop with '66 but there was a interesting 7-Liter(first use of metrics) model that was a cross between the Galaxie 500XL & LTD... That one had 428 engine standard and fire breathing 427 with two 4-bbl carbs as optional...

heres a recent pic of the 65 gal my neighbor/friend left me in '04...

looks better in pics than up close, original paint except quarters and roof - i stripped/reshot roof and pass.quarter in 04 - both quarters were bondo'd poorly when he had 1/2 panels put on in 1978...havent got around to the drivers side yet, its fugly, and all 4 door bottoms are gone... original paint elsewhere is a mile deep, BUT rubbed to the primer at most creases...Ben loved this car, other neighbors said he washed it every time he drove it. I bought new doors in 04, but just cant take a sander to her yet...
heres a link to the full story, all the frame rot, the year of 'fun'

That's actually a '68 model.

Here's what a '69 Monterey looks like:

IIRC, the only fastback full-size Merc. for '69 was the Marauder.

Youre right. I always mix up the years. Hes has a few 68 69s these past few years, so i always call on or the other wrong lol.

I know the Montclair he had (with the high compression 390) was an Ontario car, so that might have been built later. Not sure. he knows the history of his cars.

I can tell you every silly detail about my Lincolns though lol

The last year for the Montclair model was 1968; it was replaced by the Monterey Custom model in '69.
