That sucks. Buddy had same thing on a red Ford rollback wrecker he bought new in the late '90s, truck was less than a couple/three year old, he had to replace the whole grille. It started like that but then big pieces came loose, somebody even got cut by a piece sticking up as I recall. Took the '01 to the dentist this morning, stopped by HF and Food Lion too, then I went home. Extended the polarized fused cable for the maintainer to exit from under the hood at the base of the windshield on the passenger side of the '01 as well as did the same on the '07 F-150. Now they too get maintained with dedicated 1.5 amp maintainers along with the '19 Forester & '08 Mustang and my '81 Wheel Horse I already done. Only the '95 and my older '77 F-150 lack them, but I use the '95 more for errands and I let the '77 get a boost every so often. I have more leads, might hook one up on the '77 too, I have a 3 amp maintainer / charger plus a couple real chargers.

Looks like the underlying plastic body shrunk but the chrome metalized coating didn't shrink and the bond was broken. How my buddy's did, and it got worse as pieces of chrome then blew or fell off revealing grey plastic.

It seems to be a common issue on Fords from that era.
