I need help with coil conversion on 2001 Mercury Marquis LS. I know little about cars but mechanic said I pick one and he will put it on. Questions: 1) do I only have 2 in the back or do I need 4 for front and back? 2) I would like as smooth a ride possible, like an air suspension. I will not be putting a lot of weight in the back. Which ones should I get? The Marquis was given to me by an older relative that can't drive anymore and doesn't want to pay insurance. Excellent condition, except air suspension. Only 72,352 miles. I can't afford new air suspension. I'm hoping coil can fix my only problem. Thank you for help. I have pictures of the car but can't figure out how to post them.

I'd put just stock coils in the rear, you already have coils in front so just need the two rear coils. Nothing fancy, just stock coils will work for you. The standard coils ride great.
The air bags biggest draw was they adjusted to loads, pumped up to raise the rear if loaded heavy. These cars have enormous trunks, one can haul groceries for a long time and never fill them, some pull trailers to. I only added Air Lifts for trailer use even though it pulled mine just fine without them, but they eliminate sagging.

True enough, but if the mechanic is leaning away from simple repair, makes me wonder what he found. Coils are pretty reliable.

What is ACTUALLY wrong with the air suspension? This. Is the AIR SUSP light on? Does the back end sag overnight? Compressor noisy or inop?

True enough, but if the mechanic is leaning away from simple repair, makes me wonder what he found. Coils are pretty reliable. Most mechanics I know, and I know a lot, can't be bothered to even think about fixing that system properly. If OP is not at a dealer, and considering that they're saying to replace with coils - they're not - I can almost guarantee that that's the situation. Almost every component in the system is incredibly easy to fix properly, but every shop I ever worked in that wasn't a dealership wouldn't do anything but replace with coils. My recommendation would be to get the system properly fixed, unless the budget is the main issue.

yes, the air suspension light is one and the mechanic said the motor is making a noise and about to go. He suggested I switch to coil because the bags won't last much longer either and fixing the air suspension, I'm looking around $1000. replacing with coil, it will be around $250

Get the suspension to air up, then shut off the switch in the trunk. If the car holds level for a week (should hold for much longer) then the air lines, air springs, and solenoids are good. If the compressor needs replacement Suncore is a good brand: https://www.amazon.com/Suncore-40F-20-Su...y+Grand+MarquisSuper easy to replace and only $127...where did you get $1000 from?
