It's not a common size, so I'm always scanning my local want ads for sets. BION, often guys will take entire sets of Goodyear Eagle RSA's off and sell 'em. I've seen more than one good 4 tire sets sold this way. There's one set of 70% available right now for $220 for 4, mounted and balanced.
But I haven't bought them because, well, noise and vibration. I'm getting old and more sedate and I realize I'm never going to do 120 mph in these things anymore, yet I will have to listen to and feel their damn road hum all the damn time. This is causing me to gravitate towards a comfort tire and I've found two I like that are cheap. Falken Ziex for about $75 a tire and Uniroyal Tiger Paw GTZ with a 99W speed rating for $70 a tire from Performance Tire.
The Uniroyals were the quietest smoothest ones I've driven in a long time. Were I forced to buy a set new at retail, that's probably what I'd buy.
But instead, I've outfitted my daily driver with the very best Goodyear Eagle summers and Firehawk Winter tires that I could shuffle off of the 10 Vics I've owned. This was not that hard to do because more often than not when I'd pick up a car at auction, it would have a new set of tires just mounted and they almost all had a new Eagle RSA in the trunk. So I just kept the best, and sold off the rest. I also have a standing order at my local tire shop to set aside anything decent in a 235/55r17 that they come across.
My Sport came with a cheap, but newish set of Arizonian all weathers and they're fine by me. Quiet, but far from special.

and haven't found anything that wows me. Any suggestions? Tires you've used? Yeah, same here. I run that size on the caprices. It's the stock impala ss tire. The kumho asx were great but only have two left on the rear of the 91. The tires that came with the wheels for the 95 had fairly new rikens. Were ok, just noiser than the kumhos. There's a new version now. Tirerack showed them for a while recently. So now I'm on 6 hankook ventus. It's more a 'truck' tire. Looks skinnier. Ride well enough I guess, but also got some 18" vette wheels ready for the next go around. Plenty of availability in 255/45-18

You can get 255/50/17 Nitto 555's on eBay for $150/each. Pretty well regarded tires by many Panther folk. I'll be switching out my RSA's for them when the time (and money) comes.
