Hello from St. Louis.
I just purchased a 09 cvpi; was a k9 unit with 124k and 2400 idle hrs. I would like to invite opinions on the value of performing a "shift improvement" kit installation and service of the valve body. Also any ideas on beginning upgrades. Thanks!

It's called a J-mod. A fellow on here sells them.

I've had them installed before, but never have done one myself. There is a good video on Youtube, but the trans is upside down in the video, so no fear of anything falling out. That's cheating!

I consider myself to be experienced, but have not taken on a J-mod. One thing doesn't go correctly, and the trans doesn't work, plus you're working under the car with trans fluid dripping on your head.

Yeah I wouldn't go with a "shift improvement kit". The J-mod is a bit different, being designed by one of the guys that actually helped engineer the trans in these cars. (Jerry, hence J-mod)

Easiest way to do it would be buying an extra valve body, you just need to drill a couple holes to a larger diameter and then install it. Removing accumulator springs is optional.

I did the JMod.. like many others here. Bought the stuff from 88grandmarq. Installed it myself. I’m afraid of transmissions, literally scared to death about them. It took me about 3 hours. However, unlike others, I didn’t mess with the springs and such.

The only tool that is a must have, is the inch/lb torque wrench for the bolts. There is a diagram on the sequence and such. 88grandmarq included this diagram as well.

BTW, I just posted this in another new member thread. I'll repost here as I think it's valuable information for new Crown Vic owners:

"If you haven't yet, just a few things I wish I'd done earlier:

Check the FEAD (belt, tensioner and pulley system) for play and wear, these cars usually idled a TON in their past life. Mine has over 12000 idle hours, an hour being equal to ~33 miles of driving, that's 396K on the FEAD. Not counting the 127K on the clock.

Intake manifolds fail pretty easily on these cars, don't go with the Dorman unit if you can help it. You'll lose HP and TQ.

Replace the front 02 sensors, check the driver and passenger floor for rot above the cats.

Also check the steering shafts for play, looseness and wear. There was a recall on a ton of them, more than a few people lost complete steering input due to them dropping out of the column. I actually found a report of a Cranston officer crashing into the median on rt. 37 less than 2 miles from my house.

I'd highly recommend changing out the trans fluid and switching to a pan with a drain plug asap, just to avoid any issues. Consider a J-mod as well while you're in there.

Good luck with your Vic! I'm sure she'll serve you well for many years to come."

As far as upgrades, find out what gear ratio you have and if you'd like to go up a size or two. The PD put in LSD 3.55s in my current P7B. I prefer those over my 2001 LXs 3.27s.

Catback exhaust and a tune would probably be the most cost effective mods. I got my SCT x4 tuner used for $220 shipped on Ebay. (Usually 399 new) Marty charges $170 for the tune, or you can get the whole package from him for $515.

Greatly improved throttle response, it's like the car looses a couple hundred pounds and it doesn't feel like the engine is lazy any more.

A lot of people like the KYB shocks and Moog suspension parts, just avoid the economy line.

Welcome, and yes, Jmod. I drove to 88grandmarq a couple weeks ago and had the J-mod performed. Do it, you won't be disappointed.
