car-part.com is showing different interchanges between 08&down aluminum driveshafts vs 09&up. Is there actually any difference or does car-part just have the interchange wrong? Thanks in advance!

Fitment is exactly the same.
U-joint size may have changed.

Though the best option would be the MMX driveshaft from 99-01.

Did civilian cars still have the longer drive shaft? (wasn't much difference in length) and the cop cars had the shorter shaft with what was it, a slightly longer tailshaft housing?

I believe that the aluminum driveshaft fitted to P71's and Town Cars after 09 is a different length than the steel shaft in the non-p71's of the same age and they are not directly swappable. I think the transmission length was different, necessitating a different length shaft even though the WB may have remained the same.

Somebody who knows more than I will chime in shortly, I'm sure.

The aluminum driveshaft is shorter by about 3/4" and the trans tailshaft housing was longer than on civ models with steel driveshafts.

P71s and Towncars had long tail transmissions.
Civilian Vic and MGM had short tail transmissions, as did Mustangs and F150s.

P71s had a shorter aluminum driveshaft to compensate for this longer transmission.
Towncars have a 3" longer wheelbase, so use an even longer steel driveshaft.

So, to use a long tranny, you must use an aluminum driveshaft.
To use a short tranny, you either use the steel driveshaft, or an aluminum driveshaft plus a spacer.
