Before you remove them I have a few ideas:

1) Put some foam "noodles" on the wrap around bar, and tell people that you use it to move people out the way.

2) Paint the wrap around pieces, maybe red. I don't know why.

3) Put some metal mesh in between the two wrap around pieces.

though I do prefer the heavy duty version of the wraparound

Go to an open parking lot at Walmart and take nail some empty carts. I used to do it in my 78 which had a battering ram like stock bumper. My girl would always get pissed.
